Take an East African road trip and spend nine days searching for wildlife among Tanzania’s incredible scenery, from the remote Usambara Mountains to the vast expanse of the Serengeti. Go on game drives in search of lions, elephants and rhinos, and experience small-town life during village stays, crafting and cooking sessions. This overland adventure is all about being as close to nature and wildlife as possible – camping in the wild, watching animals you’ve only ever seen on TV in the flesh and going without wi-fi most nights.

Why you'll love this trip
  • Explore the Serengeti, a wildlife arena like no other, and look for lions, leopards, elephants and giraffes in this iconic park.
  • Learn to prepare a Swahili dish, crafting and learning about village life in Mto wa Mbu.
  • Take a mind-blowing safari across the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater in an open-roof 4WD vehicle for a chance to see endangered black rhinoceros.
  • Embark on a hike through the Usambara Mountains to the Irente viewpoint, then stop at a farm on the way back for a picnic lunch.
  • Accompanied by a local crew — a leader, driver and cook – you'll be in excellent hands for the duration of your adventure.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, the East African Wildlife Society. Donations help them protect endangered wildlife, support conservation and promote sustainable management of natural resources in East Africa.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, and getting as close as possible to the Big Five. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/au/africa/overland
  • Camping in the Serengeti National Park with no barriers between you and the animals is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader. You will be briefed as a group on arrival.
  • At Usambara Mountains, you'll hike to the beautiful Irente viewpoint. It's not overly strenuous, but a reasonable level of fitness is required to enjoy the walk.
  • As the early bird catches the worm, the early camper sights the animals. There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
  • This trip can be fit together with another adventure to make a larger ‘combo’ tour. Some passengers on your tour will have been travelling together prior to the start of your trip on the Zanzibar to Nairobi trip (YXOQC).

A excellent trip with the best crew ever. Mambo, Chalo & Kawaya are incredibly passionate, organised and a real family. Glory's tour in Mto wa Mbu was very good. Asante sana kaka!

A well-designed itinerary, good accommodation and overland camping equipment, and guides who went out of their way to ensure a good trip.

This trip was AMAZING! It was built into our 36 day trip, Johannesburg to Kenya. We saw all of the Big 5, plus the cheetah and leopard!! We white water rafted in Victoria Falls, canoed next to elephants in the Okavango Delta and camped in the Serengeti amongst lions and hyenas. I would Highly recommend this trip!!

We really enjoyed our Intrepid trip. We will not hesitate to recommend the camping trips to friends. We are both retired, but as long as you are reasonably fit and enthusiastic you will have no problems, particularly with the support offered by the crew. Other travellers were also energetic, friendly and supportive of each other (which might vary from trip to trip, but suspect that it is generally the case for people taking a trip of this nature).
