Why you'll love this trip
  • Try your hand at mask-making in Venice at a locally specialised Venetian Atelier, ready to help your family discover this unusual art form for yourselves.
  • Test your family’s fitness with a hike on the renowned paths of the Cinque Terre, then test the kids’ culinary skills with a hands-on pesto-making class in Levanto. Yum!
  • Oh, and did we mention the food? During your family’s adventure-filled days, be sure to try as many Venetian, Tuscan and Roman favourites you can – your group leader will have a heap of suggestions.
  • Head to the World Heritage-listed Leaning Tower of Pisa to take photos with your family, including the classic “here’s me holding up the tower!” shot.
  • Spend a full day exploring Florence – the city of the Renaissance and the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region – and discover the gorgeous Duomo, plenty of pizza places and Michelangelo’s David.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Cooperativa Coraggio. Donations help them regenerate 22 hectares of unused public land to create local jobs and produce organic food in Italy. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Is this trip right for you?
  • The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Train travel is a fast way to traverse long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. Italian trains are comfortable and all have toilets. Please note that you will have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'What to Take' section of the Essential Trip Information.
  • Summer temperatures can be extreme in many regions of Italy (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Please note that rooms in Europe can seem rather small by American or Australian standards and often there are no double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together.

We had a wonderful time on our Italy vacation. It was our first time and enjoyed experiencing several locations. There’s LOTS of walking so wear comfortable shoes. It’s quickly paced, with a nice tour of several areas. I recommend staying a few days after in Rome to give yourself lots of time to see everything. Pack lightly (large backpack or carryon size) because you are going to be on trains, some without assigned seats or luggage racks(limited space). Personally, I think it’s best for kids ages 10+. Smaller kids will have a harder time lifting luggage in the trains.

It’s was a great way to explore Italy with family. The tour leader Arianna was amazing and planned everything perfectly and always there to help and answer any questions. She knows in and out of every place we went and shared many tips about food and other activities in each town. The point that was disappointing about this trip and I hope Intrepid reconsider is the choice of hotels. We stayed in four hotels and 2 out of 4 of them was really poor quality places that hardly would be rated as 1 or 2 star hotels forget about 3. The other two hotels in Venice and Florence were fine and a reasonable three star hotel. The last hotel in Rome was terrible so that in hot July weather in Rome 38 degree temperature the room’s AC was broken and it took a day for them to change our room and even the second room didn’t have a proper working AC. It was disappointing to finish our trip with this hotel while we enjoyed other aspects of this tour. I can’t imagine visiting Italy 🇮🇹 without the help of a your leader like Arianna.

Arianna our tour leader was an excellent help and cared about everyone in the group. She shared great tips and places in each town and arranged everything in advance including booking restaurants for us even for days that meal was not included. The only aspect of this trip that was not good was the Hotel in Rome and Levanto. In particular the hotel in Rome with broken AC in summer and some pluming issues in bathroom made our last night not great.

Intrepid is a great way to experience travelling in a group. A few times in Italy my son would say, ‘thank god for Tony’ navigating the tickets, trains, luggage etc it was nice to have someone who understood the language and you followed to the right spot with no stress or fuss. The activities included were extremely memorable as they were things we wouldn’t normally have chosen to do but were a great chance to get the group together and have a laugh. Stress free, non stop on the go travelling. Was exhausting but so rewarding.
