- Get up close and personal with the active volcanoes scattered across the Aeolian Islands and maybe take a dip in one of the sulphur springs.
- Search crumbling Greek and Roman ruins and wander the back streets of Taormina – a charming hilltop Sicilian town.
- Explore the cliffside fortifications of Tropea and unwind at the beach under the Aeolian sun. Then, hop on a boat for a tour of the Aeolian Islands and cool off with a swim in the sea.
- Taste a Neapolitan pizza in Naples – where it allegedly all began – then indulge your senses with local favourites from Civita, Tropea and Stromboli.
- See the best of Calabria in a short time by learning from the locals – try your hand at fishing with them on a traditional Messina boat ride.
- Transportation on the trip includes local trains, private vehicles and public buses. The trains are comfortable (and have toilets), but they can be busy, especially in peak summer. You’ll need to carry your own luggage so ensure it meets our weight and size recommendations in the ‘Packing’ section of the Essential Trip Information.
- Summer temperatures can exceed 40°c, so use sun protection, wear layers and stay hydrated. Many European hotels lack air-conditioning and local trains’ cooling systems can fail. Beaches are crowded during peak season so consider the time of year you travel.
- European hotel rooms may seem small by American or Australian standards, and they often have two single beds instead of doubles.
- If you’re interested in a longer trip, consider starting in Rome with our ’Rome to Sicily’ trip (code ZMSFC).
