The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Trains are a fast way to cross long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. They are comfortable and all have toilets, however can sometimes be quite busy. Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'What to Take' section of the trip notes.
As there are cobblestones in many European cities, it's recommended that you leave any wheelie bags or cases at home and bring a backpack instead. Often there are no lifts or escalators in train stations or in the hotel, so you will have to carry your bags up and down the stairs yourself.
Summer temperatures can be very high in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water. Also, many hotel rooms are not equipped with air-conditioning. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
As accommodation on this trip is twin-share, single travellers will share a room with another traveller of the same sex. If you’d prefer not to share, a single room supplement is available at an additional charge. Please ask your travel consultant for more details, and please note that in some hotels a single supplement exclusion applies where single rooms are not available. Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. This trip is a great opportunity to get to know other travellers, so embrace it while you can. Please note that some hotels on this trip offer shared bathrooms only, as opposed to en-suite facilities. Also, rooms can seem rather small by American or Australian standards, and instead of double beds there can be 2 single beds that can be pushed together.
This itinerary is valid for departures from 01 January 2017 to 27 October 2017. View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2018 - 31 December 2018
A Single Supplement is available on this trip, please ask your booking agent for more information. The price of the Single Supplement doesn't include the following nights where single rooms may not be available. If a single room becomes available at check-in for these nights, there may be the option to upgrade to a single room and pay the surcharge locally for that night:
- Days 2-5 Lucca
- Days 6-7 Cinque Terre
- Days 12-14 Swiss Alps
Our Rome to Paris trips score an average of 5 out of 5 based on 7 reviews in the last year.
A wonderful way to have an authentic experience everywhere you travel. Eliminates most of the stress involved with travel, while still enabling you independence and the ability to tailor your trip to you. A big tip - if your trip notes include recommendations about how much luggage to bring, FOLLOW THEM! Members of our group didn't follow these recommendations, and brought over twice the recommended amount, and it was a huge inconvenience for everyone for the whole trip.

The best holiday every! Great mix of organised days and free day I used a pack as suggested by Intrepid and would recommend. Would suggest research the places you are to visit and book tickets in advance for sights that are not included in the itinerary. e.g., Vatican, Colosseum, Moulin Rouge etc. Our tour guide Lauren was excellent and I couldn't fault her. She was a minefield of knowledge, very friendly and approachable. Conducted herself and all her charges in a professional and organised manner. The fact that Lauren was fluent in both Italian and French added to the complete experience. We had a great group of fellow travellers, apart from the one weird guy, which I guess is all part of the draw. Well done Intrepid, it was an amazing trip and I would definitely do it again. Also loved the length of 21 days also.
