Te Henga or Bethells Beach has always been a favourite escape for my dog and me. Here the foaming Tasman Sea pounds the jet black sands of the beach. Rugged and wild and almost always close to empty it's easy to forget that New Zealand’s largest city is thriving just kilometres to the east. Maori, New Zealand’s indigenous people refer to themselves as the Tangata whenua, people of the land, and it is true – here the land reigns. It is a young country and raging elements are still forming and reshaping landscapes with a stunning, raw beauty. To spend time in them is good for the soul.

Always black in NZ
Every country has a local game that stirs the nation's spirit and New Zealand is no exception. Rugby is the sporting passion here and thanks to the formidable frames of indigenous Maoris they do exceptionally well in world competition. Any rugby game is an event in New Zealand, but if you are in Wellington in February then the New Zealand Sevens is a great excuse for a fun two-day party. Crazy costumes, buckets of beer and some rugby on the side all blend into a blurry celebration. 'God Defend New Zealand' and 'God Save the Queen' are the official national anthems in New Zealand, but witnessing a rugby match you'd be excused for assuming it was the Maori war chant, immortalized by the All Blacks rugby team when they perform the rousing haka tribal dance.
