Why you'll love this trip
  • You’ll never forget your first glimpse of The Treasury in Petra. Spend a day taking in the majesty and mystery of this unforgettable place on a guided tour then enjoy free time to explore.
  • Set sail down the Nile – one of the world’s most iconic rivers. Relax in comfort as scenes of everyday Egyptian life stream by and experience day turn to night from your sundeck.
  • Experience the unique sensation of floating in the super-salty waters of the Dead Sea, then cover yourself in the mineral-rich mud for a spa treatment like no other.
  • Explore the magnificent temples at Abu Simbel and see the four gargantuan statues of Ramses guarding the Great Temple, carved directly out of the mountain on the west bank of the Nile.
  • Meet Bedouin locals, learn about their ways, and sleep under the stars in a desert camp in the far-out destination of Wadi Rum.

Is this trip right for you?
  • Cairo is notorious for road congestion and air pollution. Be prepared for one of the busiest cities in North Africa.
  • The walkways around ruins can be uneven, dusty and rocky, so be sure to bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. At major sites such as the Pyramids, you can expect to be exposed to the elements at length, so be prepared with a hat, sunscreen and plenty of fluids.
  • The Middle East can get hot between June and September, but this is normally a dry heat and easier to cope with than humidity. Where possible we try and visit sites in the early morning before it gets too hot.
  • Accommodation aboard the overnight train is in two-berth cabins, which are comfortable and air-conditioned. All bedding is provided, and western-style toilets are located in each carriage. General train cleanliness may not be to the same standards you are accustomed to. An included dinner and breakfast are served on board. You may want to purchase something extra beforehand to supplement your meal, particularly if you have any dietary requirements.
  • The Nile Cruise includes three nights’ accommodation and full board (drinks are not included). Your ship will be docked each night in Aswan, Edfu or Luxor – please see the Itinerary for more details. When docked, Nile cruise ships are moored lengthways alongside each other, and your ship will most likely have a ship on either side. You walk through the other ships to reach the port.
  • In Wadi Rum we stay in a permanent tented camp with shared bathroom facilities. While the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cold at night and warm clothes are highly recommended when travelling outside of the summer months.
  • Ramadan is an annual month-long festival, during which travel can be a rewarding cultural experience, however some regular services may not be available during the day, such as restaurants or cafes, and occasionally travel can be disrupted by events. Your leader will adjust the itinerary accordingly, but please consider this when selecting your travel dates. You'll find dates and further information in the 'Climate and seasonal information' section of the Essential Trip Information.

Total incompetence from beginning to end. Couldn't even organise a simple airport to hotel transfer. Had to get an expensive taxi and I'm still waiting on a reimbursement. Intrepid is run by incompetent scam artists with no regard for the well-being of their customers. Cannot recommend Intrepid to anyone.

Egypt is fascinating on many levels. With our guide Sayid Said we felt we were in excellent hands. Going with Intrepid meant we were supporting local businesses. Plus we had a great group varying in ages.

I found that Egypt & Jordan was a fantastic experience. Tour guides were excellent & helpful, with language, history, etc, whilst travelling in a culturally different part of the world.

PHIL · Traveled April 2023
To the Intrepid Staff: My wife, Christy Jane Mac Ewan, and I, Phillip Knaiger, (Booking Number 6279946), travelled to Egypt and Jordan on Intrepid Tours from April 12, 2023 to April 30, 2023. The tours met or exceeded most of our expectations; we had a wonderful time. Thus, we would like to offer some comments on our experiences in the hope that you will find them useful when planning similar tours in the future. Transfers to and from the airports and to the hotels were excellent, and very much appreciated. We found your agents quickly, and with their assistance were guided easily through visa and immigration. In Egypt, we were led by Hany Mustafa (leader #20100520) an excellent guide. Hany was very knowledgeable, kind, considerate, and well organized. He provided us with deep understanding of Egypt’s history and insights into life in modern Egypt. Hany created a friendly, inclusive atmosphere, which was enhanced by his gentle humour, and the small size (12) of the group. Something he did, which we really appreciated, was suggest extra activities and excursions that we could pursue on our own free time. For example, he initiated and arranged for my wife and another member of the tour to visit Nephartari’s tomb during our rest day on the Nile cruise. This addition to their tour was a highlight for both of them. Therefore, we highly recommend Hany to you. Also, the drivers were excellent, friendly and reliable; we always felt safe with them behind the wheel. The cities and sites that were chosen were uniformly fascinating, and the pacing very good, including plenty of rest time in evenings and on drives. The level of difficulty rated for the tour was perfect. We arrived at our hotels tired, but eager for the next day. We often left our hotel very early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds at the most popular sites, which we appreciated. The accommodations were very good, with the exception of the overnight train. The compartment was filthy and had to be cleaned thoroughly by us. The toilets flushed onto the tracks which was unsanitary. Although we were able to sleep, many of our group were unable to, and there were many complaints. The Nile cruise was wonderful. The cabins were clean, and the service was good. However, because our cabins were on a low deck the bedrooms were noisy when another ship moored alongside because the other ship’s engines were constantly running. We suggest booking cabins on an upper deck. The next phase of our tour was in Jordan. Our tour was led by Mohammed Assaff, who was very informed and well organized. We enjoyed his leadership and knowledge thoroughly. The sights we visited were fascinating, the hotels were comfortable, and again the driver was excellent. The only negative experience was the desert camp and “safari” at Wadi Rhum. The desert itself was wonderful, and every bit as beautiful as one could wish, but the camp was shared by a much larger group of teens, which diluted our group experience, and the tent accommodations, with only two toilets per gender in communal washrooms were a disappointment. (On a previous tour of Morocco lead by by Peregrine Tours, we stayed in a Bedouin tent campsite with only our small group. This was far superior to the camp experience in Jordan; and because only our group stayed in the camp, it was a much friendlier experience.) The jeep ride through Wadi Rhum was far too long and uncomfortable. A shorter and more direct route would have been preferable and would still have offered plenty of vistas of the landscape to enjoy. We hope you will consider these comments as helpful, and aside from the few negative aspects of both tours we would not hesitate to recommend Intrepid to our friends and family. We hope to travel with Intrepid again. Thank you for our wonderful experiences. We shall never forget them. Sincerely, Phil Knaiger and Jane Mac Ewan
