With dozens of islands scattered off the Dalmatian Coast, Croatia was simply made for sailing.
It’s no mystery why Croatia has become the darling of Europe, what with its perfect blend of Old-World charm and youthful exuberance. After all, this is the place where tumbledown villages still make wine by hand, ancient royal palaces become breezy open-air piazzas , and a pulsing underground night scene means you can shout ‘zivjeli’ till sunrise. It just so happens that your best ticket to see all of this is also at the prow of a boat, hopping from island to island and closing out the day with drinks by the Adriatic.

Highlights of Croatia sailing

Get lost in Split’s Diocletian Palace
Once the ancient palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD, this tangle of cobbled streets and narrow lanes is ripe for exploration. Get lost searching for the perfect gelato, rub shoulders with the locals in trendy closet-sized bars and climb the steps of the Cattedrale di San Domino for spectacular views over town. In the warmer months, the sound of live opera and classical music rings through the city’s whitewashed squares.

Walk the walls of Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik’s biggest claim to fame might be its starring role in the cult TVs series Game of Thrones, but when you’re done walking the ramparts you’ll find the city’s real charm rests in the details. There’s laneway restaurants still serving family recipes, cliffside bars to while away the day, literal underground nightclubs thumping till the wee hours and centuries of history to be unearthed at every corner.

Live the high life in Hvar
Come summer expect to see this luxurious port brimming with fancy yachts and fun-loving partygoers. At 20,000 visitors a day, Hvar is undoubtedly one of the most popular islands in Croatia. But what more can you expect from an island that also holds the official title as the sunniest place in the country? Find out for yourself at the marina’s swanky restaurants and trendy restaurants, or escape the fuss and soak up the views from Hvar Town’s iconic hilltop fortress.

Wine and dine in Korcula
If Hvar is the domain of glamour and decadence, then Korcula is the quiet retreat for those seeking a different pace. This is where you’ll find time honoured traditions and folk music, secluded coves are dotted along the southern coast and a thriving viticulture that’s a treat for budding sommeliers. Spend the day eating your way through the island’s laneway cafes and, come evening, try and catch a performance of the island’s unique Moreska sword dance (usually seen between June and September).

Croatia Sailing Adventure - Dubrovnik to Split, September 2017

More information on the size of the ship, closeness of quarters, and toilet facilities (campaign at best) would have been more useful and ultimately would have made us consider a more expensive alternative to make our travels a little more luxurious. The inability to flush toilet paper was difficult for my partner and I , therefore we could only go to the public toilet at marinas moored at.

A great opportunity to explore Croatia from another side, which is not only touristy. Apart from sailing it is a relaxing trip where you learn a lot about culture and could try a lot of delicious food.

Great trip ! It is what you make of it. The cabins are quite small, so pack smart and pack light. We were coming from a colder primary destination so space was definitely at a premium. Wonderful destinations and wonderful people :)

A really nice week of cruising in very nice waters. Next time I might go Split to Dubrovnik, since we seemed to encounter a lot of unfavorable winds going Dubrovnik to Split.

Great trip! You're able to see some amazing out of the way islands that would be difficult to access normally and enjoy the beautiful oceans at the same time. Highly recommend!

This trip was as described, lots of fun and a great way to see Dalmatia for those of us who want to see and experience the real islands, their history and culture. The trip does not include on-land tours, these need to be organised personally so try to get together with your travel mates and plan these if you are interested. Otherwise, sit back, feel the breeze, swim in crystal clear waters and relax.

I had an amazing time on the Croatia sailing trip. It was a wonderful way to see Croatia and it's beautiful islands. The food and wine are really good too. You do need to be okay with tight quarters and need to have a go with the flow attitude but it was a great getaway.
