Welcome to Sri Lanka, an island nation of sunny sands, exotic scents and mouth-tingling spices. Relax on Negombo’s sweeping coastline and then dine on the catch of the day at a seafood restaurant. Visit a coconut plantation in Maravilla and taste-test their fiery coconut sambal. Master traditional snacks, such as hoppers and paratha, at street stalls.
Gain insight into the preparation of Sri Lanka's short eats - delectable bite-size morsels available at street food stands and hole-in the wall vendors - on tasting tour. Next, take a cycling trip around some of Anuradhpura’s sacred sites. Finish the day with a local family and assist in the preparations for the evening meal.
Explore the impressive cave temples of Dambulla. In the afternoon, wander amongst exotic produce at the wholesale markets.
It's an early morning drive this morning to admire the commanding views from the top of Sigiriya. On the way to Kandy, stop in at the Matale spice garden and learn about the different spices grown in the area.
Visit a colourful market then make dana (offerings) to monks, cooking a meal to share with them. Later, witness a traditional Kandyan dance performance and admire the impressive architecture of the Temple of the Tooth.
Travel on a scenic train journey to Haputale for an overnight stay overlooking tea plantations, where we learn how to prepare vegetables and fish the local way. Visit a tea plantation before sampling the distinct flavours of Tamil cuisine over lunch with a local family.
Sink your sweet tooth into traditional desserts like vadi and aluwa on a visit to Sinhalese family, noting the epicurean influence of former colonial powers Portugal and the Netherlands. Travel on to Mirrissa and spend time on the beach before meeting the local stilt fishermen for an insight into their lives.
After breakfast it’s time to head the southwest coast of Sri Lanka to visit Galle Fort, an imposing for built by the Portuguese in 1588. After our visit it’s back to Colombo. Farewell Sri Lanka with one last breakfast before this tasty journey ends.
