- 2014-01-01 - 2014-12-31
Experience island living in Hawaii while exploring Honolulu, Kona and Kauai
Oh Hawaii, you tropical, sun-blessed beauty. Be swooned by the sun, romanced by the people and lulled to sleep by the waves crashing on coral reef. Spend the days lazing on white sands, exploring active volcanoes or catching some gnarly breaks. And come night-time, hit up an evening luau on the beach, where campfires burn, traditional Hawaiian fare is served and moonlight dancing takes the centre stage. Hawaii is everything you have ever been told about it – incredible landscapes, irresistible beaches, delectable food and an unmistakable island vibe. It might just be your perfect slice of paradise.
Hawaiian Highlights SummaryAdd to Shortlist
Plunge into the salty seawater on a surfboard or kayak, or don a snorkel and flippers and scour the waters for colourful fish. Perhaps visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial, a tribute to the fallen service members. In the evening, why not stroll around O'ahu’s most popular beach, Waikiki, or jump in the warm waters and glide alongside turtles.
Gaze at the incredible, eroded landscape of Kauai, the ‘Garden Isle’. There are more than 60 beaches and many incredible hiking trails around this incredibly pristine island, which is the least developed of the Hawaiian archipelago. Movie buffs can check out the locations where Jurassic Park, Tropic Thunder and Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed. Otherwise just kick back and absorb the surfie vibe around town. In the evening, put on a lei and head to the beach for a traditional Hawaiian luau.
Head to the Big Island to explore two grand volcanos, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Mauna Loa is the largest volcano in the world and Kilauea is the most active. Feel the forces of nature while exploring these megalithic giants. Hike around a crater rim to see lava tunnels, steam vents and lava deserts, then stop by Jaggar Museum to learn some more about these beasts of the earth’s core.
With fine weather and warm, crystal-clear waters, it’s no wonder that Kona was the chosen dwelling place for many Hawaiian kings. Hit the waters and go snorkelling with manta rays, and to refuel, head to a lunch spot and sample the national dish, poke.
After arriving in the hottest place on the Maui island, make tracks to the beach where the sand is gold and the surf is perfect. Pay a visit to the Humpback National Marine Sanctuary and, in season, spot one of these giant mammals, or just sit back and relax on the beach with a mai tai in hand. Rise early the following morning to watch the sunrise over the ocean from the vantage point of the mighty Haleakala, a dormant volcano.
