  • Visit Lima's historic centre
  • Witness the majesty of Machu Picchu
  • Wander Cuzco's atmospheric streets
  • Learn about local culture at a Sacred Valley community
  • Explore Peru's mixture of colonial and Inca architecture

The Plaza Mayor, in the heart of Lima’s historic centre, is an excellent base to explore this pulsating capital. Visit the Museo de la Inquisicion for an insight into the Spanish Inquisition, or head to the fascinating catacombs and interesting artworks of monasterio de San Francisco. When the sun goes down, why not search out some of Peru’s intriguing culinary specialities in the eclectic suburb of Miraflores before mixing it with the locals in one of the many buzzing bars.
Get acquainted with this charming city's intriguing blend of Inca and Spanish cultures on a guided walking tour of its lesser-known sights. Don't miss the opportunity to sample mate de coca (coca tea).
Travel through the lush Sacred Valley, looking out for the maize crops covering the terraces that stretch high up the valley walls. Stop in at a local community to learn about their traditional lifestyle and maybe try your tongue around a few words of the Quechua language. Spend the night exploring the Ollantaytambo ruins – a magnificent example of Inca urban planning.
With ample free time – and an entry ticket to many of the city's fascinating attractions – Cuzco is perfectly suited to some independent exploration. A trek out to see the archaeological sites of Saqsayhuaman, Qenqo and Tambomachay is certainly recommended, as is a visit to the Coca Museum.
Travel by train from Cuzco to Aguas Calientes through the winding, fertile Urubamba Valley. Aguas Calientes is the gateway to Machu Picchu and home to some simmering hot springs that make for a relaxing soak. Alternatively, set out on a short walk to a nearby waterfall or butterfly farm.
Wake early for a morning bus ride to monumental Machu Picchu. Spend the day exploring the ancient ruins with a local guide, marvelling at the timeworn vestiges of a once-powerful empire. The scale of Machu Picchu is truly impressive and offers many iconic photo opportunities. Return to the quiet charm of Cuzco after a day of awesome sightseeing.
Still seeking adventure? Why not head to the Urubamba River for some whitewater rafting or mountain biking thrills. Those with weary legs and a hearty appetite can choose to have lunch at the Aldea Yanapay Cafe, an initiative that provides Cuzco's underprivileged kids with health and education facilities.
