Day 1 Playa del Carmen

Kick off this epic Central American adventure in Mexico's beachside wonderland, Playa del Carmen. As the trip doesn't include much time here, why not book in a few extra days pre-tour to explore all that this patch of Caribbean splendour has to offer.

Days 2-3 Tulum

Catch a local bus along the coast to the tiny town of Tulum. With blinding white beaches and stunning turquoise seas, the clifftop Mayan ruins are a gorgeous sight to behold.

Days 4-5 Caye Caulker

Bid Mexico adios and zip out by ferry to Caye Caulker; a tiny limestone coral island 32 km off the Belize mainland. A hotspot of marine life, this pristine marine reserve attracts divers from all over the world on account of its diverse marine life.

Days 6-7 San Ignacio

Leave the coast behind and head for the tranquil mountain town of San Ignacio. There's no shortage of adventures to be had here, and with two free days there's plenty of time to visit the various Mayan sites strewn throughout the area.

Days 8-9 Flores/Tikal

Cross the border into neighbouring Guatemala and settle into the relaxed island life of Flores. This northern town's primary claim to fame is its proximity to the Mayan ruins of Tikal, which is well worth a visit, but Flores itself is also a very pleasant place in which to spend some time.

Days 10-11 Rio Dulce

Translating to 'Sweet River', Rio Dulce is a peaceful riverside town set among deep jungle. For a truly memorable travel experience, hop aboard a local boat headed for the Reggae-infused town of Livingstone. Be certain to keep eyes peeled for the rare - and protected - manatees which inhabit these waters.

Day 12 Antigua

Prime music playlists for a long bus ride ahead. Although we won't be arriving in Antigua until the late afternoon, there'll still be time for a city stroll to stretch out those legs.

Day 13 San Jorge La Laguna

Nestled in the Guatemalan highlands, the small market town of Chichicastenango makes for an attractive stop en route to our homestay with a local family in San Jorge La Laguna.

Day 14 Panajachel/Chichicastenango

With a spectacular backdrop and amiable small-town vibe, the lakeside town of Panajachel is the perfect place to unwind or, alternatively, embark on any number of outdoor activities. Get the blood pumping mountain biking, horse riding, kayaking or paragliding.

Days 15-16 Antigua

Return to Antigua and spend some time getting to know this delightful colonial style city. Admire the quaint architecture, snoop out the hole-in-the-wall eateries or browse the handicrafts on sale in the local market - all against the backdrop of a dramatic volcano skyline.

Days 17-18 Copan

Travel on to the Guatemalan border and cross into the highlands of Honduras. The Copan ruins, tucked away in folds of verdant jungle, showcase the rich heritage of Mayan culture and are a breathtaking sight.

Days 19-21 Roatan Island

Drive across the Honduras countryside and catch a ferry out to idyllic Roatan Island. Exuding a markedly different vibe from mainland Honduras, Roatan offers some of the most exquisite, and affordable, scuba diving in the Caribbean - if not the world.

Day 22 Comayagua

Travel back inland to the laidback colonial town of Comayagua, home to some interesting museums and an expansive central plaza.

Days 23-24 Granada

Take a combination of transport options into Nicaragua and on to the picturesque city of Granada. With expansive cobblestone streets and elegant architecture, Granada is a delightful city to get to know by foot. In the evening, why not head out to one of the local drinking holes and share a few cervezas with the local revellers.

Days 25-26 Ometepe Island

With two towering volcanoes, some beautiful swimming holes and an impressive array of wildlife, remote Ometepe Island offers myriad opportunities for getting off the beaten track.

Days 27-28 Monteverde

Journey on into Costa Rica and the small highland town of Monteverde. Choose between hiking, mountain biking or zip lining as the best way to explore the region's lush cloud forest, but make sure to keep eyes peeled for the local wildlife whichever mode you opt for.

Days 29-30 La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano

Waterfalls, walks and hot springs are order of the day in La Fortuna, but a night visit to mighty Arenal Volcano is a must.

Days 31-32 San Jose

Brimming with interesting museums, bustling markets and friendly locals, Costa Rica's lively capital San Jose caters for travellers of all types.

Days 33-35 Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Hop on a local bus bound for the Caribbean coastal town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Join an optional visit to Cahuita National Park in search of sloths, monkeys and birdlife, or hire a board and get among the waves that crash on shore.

Days 36-38 Isla Bastimentos

Enter Panama and take a short boat ride out to the mellow Bocas del Toro archipelago. Gear up for some exceptional snorkelling or just rest back and soak up the slow-paced island atmosphere.

Days 39-40 Boquete

Travel inland to the serene mountain town of Boquete. After a long driving day, stretch out those legs on any of the numerous hiking trails in the region or treat yourself to a soak in the local hot springs.

Days 41-42 Santa Catalina

Lap up some beach time in the secluded coastal village of Santa Catalina. One of Central America's premier surfing hotspots, this is an ideal place to hire a board and head out for a paddle. Alternatively, sprawl out on the sands and watch how the locals do it.

Days 43-44 Panama City

Arrive in Panama City, this intriguing nation's charismatic capital. Take a stroll through the rustic ambience of Casco Viejo or embark on an optional birdwatching expedition in Soberania National Park. And so concludes one helluva Central American tour!
