A pioneer of environmental conservation and wildlife preservation from the get-go, Costa Rica positively teems with colourful flora and fauna for the spying. After sussing out the sights and spectacles of San Jose, this trip heads to the Caribbean coast where you'll get the chance to go turtle-spotting, hang out with sloths at an animal rescue centre and paddle about by kayak in search of manatees, jaguars and a wide array of birdlife. If it's a walk on the wild side you're after, this is the perfect add on to any Costa Rica trip or a great little adventure in itself.

  • Get to know Costa Rica's hip and happening capital, San Jose
  • Search for nesting turtles in Cahuita National Park
  • Gain an insight into sustainable living practices in Punta Mona

Itinerary

Make yourself at home in San Jose's lively urban centre. Delve into the colourful markets, check out the museums or get among the vibrant night scene.
Travel out to the sleepy Caribbean coastal town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. Spend some time exploring Cahuita National Park, hire a surfboard to ride the waves or learn about sustainable farming practices at a local permaculture farm.
Continue on to stunning Tortuguero National Park. Explore the surrounding coastal wetlands and their inhabitants, including reptiles, amphibians, a myriad of bird species and the endangered green sea turtle. When night falls, set out on a guided walking tour to the nesting grounds of these rare creatures.
Return to San Jose for the final night of this week-long Costa Rican Extension. Why not head out as a group to one of the local restaurants, indulge in some delicious traditional cuisine and cheers an Imperial beer (or two) to the end of this sensational trip.
