Ah, Italia. It seems a little unfair that one country does food, architecture, art, history and the central social square so perfectly. It’s just a shame the rest of the world feels the same way! But while most associate Italy with summer, relatively mild winters make Italy the perfect place to visit during the off season. On this trip, you’ll see all the fabulous spots with far fewer tourists crowding the squares and clogging up the lines. Take in the crumbling ruins of Rome, whimsical Florence and the floating 15th century city of Venice in this diverse tour.

Why you'll love this trip
  • This winter trip is a great way to see the highlights of Italy without any of the crowds.
  • Wander around Rome's famous landmarks including the Colosseum, Vatican City, Sistine Chapel, St Peter's Basilica and much more. This is a city where you'll be able to tick a lot off your bucket list.
  • The floating city of Venice is one place you’ll be happy to get lost in. The city's maze of alleyways, canals and lagoon islands lead to over 130 churches, all with their own distinct character.
  • Learn to make the king of comfort food – pasta – by hand in Bologna.

Is this trip right for you?
  • The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Trains are a fast way to cross long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. They are comfortable and all have toilets, however can sometimes be quite busy. Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'What to Take' section of the trip notes.
  • Often there are no lifts or escalators in train stations or in the hotel, so you will have to carry your bags up and down the stairs yourself.
  • This trip is designed for off-season and takes place in the colder winter months of the year. It is essential that you are aware of the climate in Italy during this time. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
  • Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together/apart. Rooms can be rather small, especially compared to American or Australian standards.
  • On this trip you must pack as lightly as possible because you will be expected to carry your own bag and although you won't be required to walk long distances with your luggage (max 30 minutes), we strongly recommend keeping the weight between 15kg / 33lb. Most travellers carry their luggage in a backpack, although an overnight bag with a shoulder strap would suffice if you travel lightly. Smaller bags or backpacks with wheels are convenient although we recommend your bag has carry straps to accommodate the cobbled streets, uneven surfaces, stairs and steps you are likely to encounter while carrying your luggage. You'll also need a day pack/bag to carry water and a camera etc for day trips.

To really appreciate Italy with its rich cultural history, delicious food, superb architecture and fascinating cities would take a lifetime. But, if you do the small group, 8 day ' Highlights of Italy in Winter' tour, you will certainly come away with a deep appreciation of this amazing country.

I’m a solo traveller, so please don’t be afraid, the tour group embraces all. Definitely try to think about booking the really busy tourist attractions in advance. Failing that skip the line tours are an easy way to get a ticket, but more expensive. However having the guide is quite invaluable and informative. I also recommend extra days at beginning and end.

We researched a lot of tours before booking and couldn’t have been happier with choosing intrepid. The people make all the difference. Out leaders were amazing and I like that intrepid tries to use local hotels that are environmentally friendly

I really enjoyed my journey through Italy with our fantastic trip leader and the three assistants, who are helpful, warm and fun. I love the art, history, food, talking to the locals and all the walking. The trip information could have been more accurate and useful. After talking to their North American office, I was led to believe that the trip leader would book the tickets for me if I let him/her know my options at the first meeting upon arrival. This turned out not to be accurate, and I and others in the group had to scramble to book tickets on the spot. By then, many attractions had sold out. Secondly, the hotel information was not accurate because two out of the four hotels was overbooked. We had to accept alternative lodgings, which was either not as nice as the original one or was in another city altogether. I felt that we had spent less time on the attractions as a result since we had to spend more time traveling from the hotel that was out of the way. If you take this trip, you will need to take care of the tickets yourself in advance to ensure access upon arrival and be prepared for changing hotels at short notice.
