Day 1 Quito

Arrive in Quito, a city steeped in history and brimming with fascinating colonial architecture. Perched at an altitude of 2,850 m under the watchful eye of the Pichincha Volcano, Quito stretches along a valley formed by the east and west ranges of the Andes, and is one of the most stunning cities in South America. Perhaps wander the cobbled streets, hang out in one of the many cafes or get to know the history of this city in one of the many fine museums.

Day 2 Otavalo

Travel along the famous Pan-American Highway to Otavalo, where an en route stopover at Calderon and Cayambe to taste the local biscochos (pastries) is essential. Offering a quintessential insight into day-to-day Ecuadorian life, visit the town’s famous market, maybe purchasing some of the colourful handmade goods available.

Day 3 Papallacta

After stocking up on local wares, continue on through the ‘Avenue of the Volcanoes’ to Papallacta – a small Andean village some 3,300 m above sea level. There’s free time here to relax in some of the local hot springs and take in the views of the majestic snow-capped Antisana Volcano before travelling onwards to a hacienda stay.

Days 4-5 Cotopaxi

Spot the highest active volcano in the world, Cotopaxi (5,897 m above sea level), on the way to stay at a local hacienda. Enjoy free time exploring the surrounding Cotopaxi National Park; the most visited national park on mainland Ecuador.

Days 6-7 Quito

Weather permitting, embark on a walk around Laguna de Limpiopungo – a stunning lake situated high in the mountains in the shadow of the Cotopaxi volcano. Then, return to Quito and experience all the charm and culture this city has to offer. Relax in one of the Mariscal district’s many cool bars and restaurants or wander around the Old Town before this Ecuadorian Haciendas trip comes to an end.
