A leader's perspective...
The first time I visited the Philippines I caught a boat across from Borneo to one of the Philippines most southerly islands. On arrival, everyone greeted me with a "Hey Joe", the standard Filipino greeting for any traveller, but a little confusing as my name is actually Jo! Island-hopping all the way to Manila, I was amazed at the unusual nature of the place. In particular, the fabulous array of public transport - horse and carts run alongside the crazily decorated ‘Jeepneys’ while lively buses zoom past. The local people I met were extremely welcoming and very fond of Karaoke - they definitely know how to belt out a tune! I found that I, on the other hand, do not... Travelling through the Philippines was an awesome experience and I would not hesitate to return.

Fancy your own island for the day?
I had a friend from the Philippines who often told me that if I ever went to her country, I should hire an island for the day. Yeah right, I thought. However, when my wife and I reached El Nido, we did just this. More or less. For US$20 we got transport, lunch and a whole day at our own island, not a soul in site. Yep, I did worry we wouldn't get picked up in the evening but hey, there could be worse places to get stranded!
