This trip includes a memorable night on a boat cruising the southern coast. Cabins and bathroom facilities are shared and not air-conditioned. Most travellers prefer to grab the mattress, blankets and pillows and sleep on the deck under a bed of Mediterranean stars.

I like the fact that Intrepid keeps the group small, so you get to know most of your fellow travelers. TIP: If you can afford it, consider having a private room!

Turkey is a fabulous place to visit with such an intriguing and complex history and a contradictory and unresolved present. This tour will disentangle the Greeks from the Hittites, the Ottomans from the nomadic Turks and will try to make sense of a contemporary culture that is wrestling with fundamentalism while seeking to be a modern nation. It is a story of triumphalism, tolerance and conflict as power shifts, resurges and collapses over history, and the story is still far from over.....
