Safety Updates
The safety of our passengers, leaders and operators is a major priority of Intrepid. With this in mind we monitor world events very closely. Intrepid makes operational decisions based on informed advice from a number of sources...
- The level of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) travel advisory. For any Intrepid Travel operated trip if this advisory is at Level 5 'Do Not Travel' then Intrepid will either cancel a trip or reroute the itinerary to avoid the areas concerned.
- With over 400 leaders on the ground in operational destinations and subsidiary companies in our main hub cities, Intrepid has access to a up to the minute flow of information as to the mood and feelings within the countries we work in.
- We are also in regular contact with the various operators we use. Their in depth knowledge and understanding of their various areas is vital.
- Other Government travel advisories...

safety guidelines
Mali (02 September 09)
IMPORTANT: Both the Australian and British Foreign Affairs departments now have Timbuktu as Level 5 - Do Not Travel areas.
Your safety whilst travelling with us is our highest concern and priority and therefore based on this official advice, we will need to reroute this itinerary. If there are subsequent updates to these travel advisories that allow us to travel to Northern Mali we will look at running the original itinerary after gathering our own information from local partners. Your tourleader will have the final decision for you at your group meeting on Day 1 of your trip.
The affect of this is that we have to stop visiting Timbuktu for the time being and implement a contingency itinerary. This shall involve spending more time in Ghana and also include a visit to the beautiful city of Segou on the banks of the Niger.
For further information please see the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs website: http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Mali
Kenya (01 September 09)
Kenya Adventure and Kenya Lodge Safari Trips will not be visiting Samburu National Reserve due to some localised violence occurring in the area. Many local farmers have moved their stock into the area of and around the park due to the prevailing drought conditions and there has been sporadic violent clashes between rangers and farmers. We wish to avoid any possibility of our passengers and staff being caught up in these problems.
Whilst at present the Department of Foreign Affairs have not changed their Travel Advice, our local company in Kenya have been in contact with local authorities in the Samburu area and we have based our course of action on this advice.
Please see the trip notes for each trip to see the alternative arrangements made.
