When people discover that my last holiday destination was Iran, it never fails to produce a response. Iran holds a fascination as somewhere mysterious and perhaps even dangerous. In reality it was one of the most beautiful and friendly places I have ever travelled. In its glory days as Persia, Iran was at the forefront of culture and architecture. Much of this remains today. Esfahan is one of the world’s most exquisite cities, and then there is the majesty of ancient Persepolis, the gardens of Shiraz and the sheer energy of Tehran. But for me Iran was also the beautiful tea houses, the ancient bazaars, the unique food and the friendly and very curious people. If you are after a unique, off the beaten track but still comfortable travel destination, Iran is for you.
