Formerly named Rangoon, Yangon is home to the holiest of all shrines at Shwedagon Paya, which glitters with gold and precious gems and is said to contain 8 hairs of the Buddha.
Dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, the ancient religious centre of Bagan features countless brick and gilded temples which dot the skyline in many shapes and forms.
A cruise on the Ayeyarwaddy River offers a unique opportunity to witness the simple daily activities of life along the river as local villages and beautiful landscapes pass by.
Once known as 'the golden city', Lord Buddha is said to have left his mark on Mandalay Hill in the form of a footprint, signalling wealth and prosperity for the land standing before it.
As a former British hill station, Kalaw makes a welcome retreat from the heat of the lower-lying areas and the surrounding hills are the home to various ethnic minority groups.
The resort town of Nyuangshwe lies at the northern end of Inle Lake, which is the life-blood for many ethnic communities found in stilt houses along the lake's shallow fringes.
The country's biggest city and former capital, Yangon has many cultural delights and excellent sights, including religious monuments, museums, parks and the Bogyoke Market.

Best of Burma (Myanmar), April 2014
Wrong time of the year to be visiting this country as it was too hot to really enjoy the experience fully. Whilst there are allowances to be made for an 'emerging' destination and I understand from many reports that accommodation is an ongoing challenge, two accommodation choices should be reviewed; The rat infested Asia Plaza Hotel in Yangon and the boat used for the river cruise. ( see section below) The tour on the whole covered all the must see sights and was well organised by our tour leader. Our tour leader, mr Ko Ko Aye, was very efficient, mature and personable.... He made sure each person was ok during the trip. Very well organised. Personable. Mature. Capable.
