Get ready for an animal-spotting adventure through eastern Africa. If arriving early, Kenya's renowned National Museum in Nairobi is a great place to get some background on this frenetic city. Meet your leader and group this evening.
Think of Africa and the sweeping plains, dramatic skies and abundant wildlife of the Masai Mara National Reserve is the image that will most likely come to mind. Travel south from Nairobi towards the Kenyan border and camp on the edge of the iconic reserve.
Discover the reserve’s rich concentration of animal life, and catch them at their most active, on an early morning game drive. Beat the heat back at camp with lunch, then look out for buffaloes, zebras and hopefully leopards as the sun sets over the grasslands. Perhaps get an unforgettably different perspective with a sunrise balloon ride high over the park.
Cross the border into Uganda, passing through Eldoret – famous for producing many of Kenya's most successful long-distance runners – and spend the night camped out on the outskirts of Kampala.
Skirt the shores of Lake Victoria and cross the Great Rift Valley to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Cruise the savanna to witness the roaming elephants, buffalo, antelopes and even lions sleeping up in fig trees.
Hire a traditional dugout canoe and glide across Lake Bunyonyi to enjoy the amazing scenery, which is some of the most picturesque in Uganda.
Make tracks across the border into Rwanda and set up camp at Ruhengeri, gateway to the gorilla trekking region. Accompanied by a local guide and trackers, hike through rugged terrain to come face-to-face with rare mountain gorillas – the sight of these gentle mountain giants is unforgettable. Head out on rainforest hikes to glimpse some of the forest's other inhabitants.
Return to Uganda and travel to the small town of Masaka, where you'll spend the night.
Stop at the equator en route to the place thrillseekers flock to in Uganda. Jinja is both a scenic riverside retreat and renowned spot for adventure activity enthusiasts.
Pass through Eldoret on the way back to the busy streets of Nairobi, where this epic African tour ends.
Welcome to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, known to the Maasai as the 'Place of Cool Waters'. For those who arrive early, perhaps check out the city's cafes and markets or visit the National Museum of Kenya.
Interact with locals on a visit to a community program in the village of Mto Wa Mbu. Admire crafts, colourful fabrics and carvings at a market before journeying to Karatu - the gateway to the Serengeti.
Explore the savanna of the Serengeti Plain and go on safari in search of Serengeti's creatures - including the Big Five - before camping deep in the bush within earshot of animal calls. For a real treat, take an optional sunrise balloon ride over the plains.
Start with the sun today as you head for the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. This lush landscape is home to over 30,000 animals including black rhinos, lions, elephants and hippos. View game and snap some unforgettable pictures from the crater floor, then head back to the camp at Karatu and relax as you swap stories of the day.
On our way to Marangu join the local community of Mto Wa Mbu with a guided stroll around the local homes, farmlands and markets.
Take a walking tour of Mshiri village and get firsthand insight into the daily lives of the Chagga people. Sample a typical Chagga meal before heading well off the beaten track to the Usambara Mountains. Relax on these lush, green slopes overlooking the vast Masai Steppe. This is the ideal base for optional hikes and guided walks.
Leave behind the mountains and travel south to the coastal town of Bagamoyo. Wander the narrow streets past crumbling monuments, watch the dhow boats at the port or enjoy a cool drink at a local bar.
Jump on a ferry to discover Africa's famed 'Spice Island', Zanzibar. Marvel at the eclectic architecture along the twisting, cobbled streets of Stone Town, the old sector of the island's capital city. Tour aromatic plantations, smelling cinnamon, vanilla and cloves, then soak up some sun on white sand beaches. There are plenty of opportunities to swim, snorkel and dive or just take it easy in the shade of a coconut palm.
Begin your African adventure in Stone Town, Zanzibar’s Old Town. Spend some time exploring its narrow streets and busy bazaars in your own time, before meeting your group and travelling to Mikumi National Park.
Spend the evening in the highland town of Iringa, perhaps going in search of some traditional African cuisine… or pizza!
Travel to the secluded Kande Beach at Lake Malawi; relax or get involved with some of the optional activities on the lake’s waters. Look out for the fisherman in his bwato (a dugout canoe made from a hollowed tree trunk) fishing on the still lake at dawn and be sure to make time to meet the Malawian people, some of the friendliest on the continent.
Cross the border into Zambia, travelling to the hidden gem of South Luangwa National Park. The Luangwa River attracts an intense concentration of animals and is renowned for its large elephant, crocodile and hippo populations. Take the chance to go on a dawn game drive and, uniquely, at night with spotlights when many of the big animals are at their most active.
Stop at the Changa Change Bridge Camp on the banks of the Luangwa River. Cool off with a dip in the pool, relax with a drink on the deck overlooking the river, or sit around the campfire listening to the sounds of Africa.
One of the fastest-growing cities in southern Africa, Lusaka is a quirky combination of contemporary charm and traditional heritage.
Explore galleries and museums, chill out in public gardens, or relax in a cafe with a cool drink in this laid-back city.
Explore some of the most significant ancient ruins in Africa at the Great Zimbabwe Ruins.
Wander along the jacaranda-lined streets of Bulawayo and visit the teeming markets before heading out to the Matabo National Park in search of rare white rhinos and leaping impalas.
Marvel at the mighty roar of the tremendous Victoria Falls, as millions of litres of water cascade into the canyon below. As your African adventure draws to a close, perhaps enjoy a final dinner with your travelling companions.
