We welcome you to join us for a meal in our home in Koromila, a town next to Kastoria in Northern Greece. We are a Greek/German family, Sultana and Martin Alexander, with two young children, Martin Anastasis and Smilla Sunshine. We also live with the children’s Greek grandparents. Sultana is an archaeologist and Martin is a cook, and he is happy to let you in on all the secrets of our family menu! We love vegetarian dishes with local produce, fresh fish, wild mushrooms, and good local wines, and we enjoy our tea with fine local herbs from our mountains and garden. We look forward to welcoming you into our home!

Tipping Info

Rather than a tip we recommend you bring a small gift for the family as a whole or each member of the family.

This tour is a part of the Urban Adventures Home Cooked series and aims to give you one of the richest travelling experiences you can ever have – the opportunity to enjoy a meal with a local family in their home.
Sultana speaks English well and will help facilitate the conversation with the rest of the family. The aim is for you to experience life exactly how it is. This experience will be no different to the Zorpidis family having any of their local friends or relatives around. It is the chance to hang out in the kitchen (customs and space willing) and chat about your life and their life, the affairs of the day that are impacting and bringing joy into their home, and to feel for a few hours just how the locals really live.
You will be met at the meeting point by one of the family who speaks English, and no doubt swing by the market or shops on the way home to pick up some last minute ingredients.
On arrival and after the introductions, if you want to help out chopping up some of the produce, or you are particularly interested in the recipe behind this local meal, we invite you to participate as much or as little as you like. Sultana or Martin will be happy to show you the ropes! Just follow the family’s lead.
When the food is ready you will all sit down together and share the meal prepared, enjoy the conversation, perhaps look at each other’s photographs, and maybe take some more together.
On our way back to Kastoria, there will be an opportunity to stop by the local shops for you to buy some of the produce you enjoyed during the meal, such as homemade sweets, pasta, dry wild mushrooms, or some excellent local wines.
This experience is real. Our families come from all walks of life. Some are probably very similar to you and some are from poor or rural backgrounds. We encourage you to check out the photos here of the Zorpidis family to make sure your expectations are correctly set about the family you will be sharing a meal with and where they live. The beauty is that everyone involved in our Home Cooked Program is a wonderful person who wants to meet travelers and share this experience with them.
