A leader's perspective...
Kremlins, banyas and beetroots are what immediately spring to mind when I think of Russia. There is nothing like spending an evening jumping from a steaming hot banya into the freezing waters of Lake Baikal, then finishing off with some vodka and a bowl of warm borsch; getting lost in the paintings and sculptures of the Hermitage museum in St Petersburg; or standing in the middle of Red Square in Moscow as the snow falls and the colourful St Basil’s Cathedral lit up before you. You can’t help but get involved in Russia's historical architecture, from the palaces of the tsars, to the icons of communism. I also challenge anyone to visit and not return home with a wooden Matryoshka doll!

You need a ushanka
The 'ushanka' - the traditional Russian fur cap with ear warming flaps may not be the most stylish of accessories, but it's certainly practical - and makes for a great Russian souvenir. When I went in search of the ultimate head-warmer as a gift for my father, a local Muscovite gave me a valuable tip on where to go to get local prices. I headed north-west from Red Square, with GUM department store on my right and St Basil's Cathedral behind me. Along Tverskaya I trotted until Mockba Hat Emporium came into view. It was hat heaven, every size, shape, cloth or hide you could imagine. I eventually found the furry black number I was looking for, but opted for the faux fur model as wolf or muskrat didn't appeal. Tip: it's not considered masculine to wear the ear flaps down and having one flap up and the other down could easily lead to a misunderstanding!
