This is one of the best trips in our range for experiencing beyond what the average tourist sees of China. Go local every step of the way with an experienced local tour leader, travelling on public transport, staying in guesthouses and hostels and of course, eating the most authentic local food everywhere you go. Here's some of what you can expect: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/a-guide-to-traditional-chinese...
Rather than just going on a day trip, stay overnight near the Great Wall in a family run guesthouse, allowing you to see this iconic structure without the crowds.
The perfect mix of cityscapes and beautiful natural scenery showcases the contrasts of China. From starting with a bang in Beijing, to hiking the heights of Huangshan, the big city lights of Shanghai, to the idyllic rural villages of Huizhou.
There are plenty of chances to get active on this trip as you explore with city walking tours, climb the many steps of Yellow Mountain, trek on the Jinshanling Great Wall and cycle countryside lanes in Hongcun.
Two overnight trains means you'll maximise your time in each destination, get to know your fellow travellers, as well as get a great sense of the vastness and landscapes of the country.
As this is a Basix trip our days aren’t packed full of inclusions and compulsory sightseeing. Instead, your leader will take you on city walks in each destination and give you plenty of options and ideas of how to spend the rest of your free time.
We pack a lot in, in a short amount of time, so if you have some time to spare we highly recommend extra time in Beijing and Shanghai before and after your trip as these cities have so much to see and do.
This trip has some overnight stays at family-run guesthouses and hostels, which tend to have more basic facilities than hotels (but often a lot more character). You’ll encounter some cold water showers, might need to rug up inside in the colder months and need to use a few squat toilets.
With treks on the Great Wall and Huangshan, both of which can be tough going with many steps, uneven surfaces and steep terrain, you'll need a good level of fitness to get the most out of this trip. Walking shoes with good support and grip are essential as is being prepared to sweat it out a bit to be rewarded with sensational views!
The overnight train travel included on this trip is in “hard sleeper” class – carriages sectioned off into 3 tier/6 berth compartments. It’s not luxury, but it’s efficient and a great local experience. If you would prefer more comfort, upgrades to “soft sleeper” (2 tier/4 berth compartments with lockable doors) can be requested, subject to availability, through your booking agent. If you would prefer a trip without overnight train travel, check out our Explore China (CBKS – 2019 only), China: Great Wall Hike, Bike & Kung Fu (CBXG – 2019 only) or South China: Hike, Bike & Kayak (CBXA – 2019 only) trips.

Incredible trip. Trekking along the wall was definitely a highlight, the part of the wall we went to was practically deserted. It was eerie and beautiful. The Yellow mountains, while very crowded, were another highlight due to the sheer beauty of the scenery. Be prepared to walk up (and down) LOTS of stairs!! I would recommend booking an extra night or two in Shanghai after the trip if you want to see the city properly. Also don’t make the same mistake I did and show up to apply for the tourist visa without the list of hotels provided by intrepid- you need this list to get the visa! Great destinations, great accommodation, great trip. Enjoy!
