Discover the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean on a sailing boat, marvel at the Acropolis in Athens, and try leaning into the slower pace of island living on Syros. And since no trip to Greece is complete without a feast, we suggest you befriend a few locals, try some world-famous feta cheese, and wash it down with a glass of ouzo. You'll be saying "opa" in no time!

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.
Depending on which trip you're on while in Greece, you may find yourself travelling by:
Live like a local resident by hopping on a local bus. Cheap, efficient and fast, it’s a great way to get around Greece’s busy cities.
Some of Greece’s most postcard-worthy scenery is best viewed from the water. Take in awesome views of quaint fishing villages, gorgeous beaches and the turquoise Aegean Sea as you hop between Greece’s famed islands aboard a ferry.
Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards
From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).
However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.
Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.
While tipping is optional in Greece, consider leaving some spare change, particularly if the service has been good, as most waiters and waitresses earn a low wage in Greece.
Internet can easily be accessed at hotels and internet cafes in most cities and major towns.
Mobile phone coverage is generally good on mainland Greece, but may not be available on some of Greece’s more remote islands. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.
Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in Greece. You may have to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some parts.
Ticket for short metro trip = 2 Euro
Takeaway souvlaki = 2-3 Euro
Greek coffee in a cafe = 4 Euro
Beer in a bar or cafeteria = 4-6 Euro
Simple meal at a restaurant = 12 Euro
Drinking tap water is safe in Greece unless otherwise marked (you may find this on some of Greece’s small and remote islands). Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Ask your leader or hotel where to find filtered water.
Credit cards are accepted by most stores in Greece but may not be accepted by smaller cafes and shops. Make sure to carry enough cash to cover smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.
ATMs are widely available in most towns and cities in Greece.
Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Discretion is advised for LGBTQI-travelers in Greece. While there are no laws against homosexual activity, it is generally frowned upon by locals, especially outside of major cities. That being said, Athens has a thriving gay scene, many islands are notorious for their anything-goes mentality and the island of Lesvos – the birthplace of reputed lesbian poet, Sappho – has long been a place of pilgrimage for lesbians.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
Greek is a very difficult language to learn, however, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (Yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals but it'll also allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you're meeting along the way.
There are between 1,200 and 6,000 islands in Greece with around 200 of them populated and able to be visited. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of a fascinating history only ever read about in books.
Greece’s coast and islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and windy, rainy winters, while the inland regions have a more continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. In the northern mountains, close to the Bulgarian border, the winters are cold with heavy snowfall, while the summers are relatively mild.
Intrepid is committed to travelling in a way that is respectful of local people, their culture, local economies and the environment. It's important to remember that what may be acceptable behaviour, dress and language in your own country, may not be appropriate in another. Please keep this in mind while travelling.
In Greece, we stay in locally run accommodation including guesthouses, smaller-scale hotels and homestays in an effort to support the local economies. We also visit locally-run restaurants and markets where travellers will have opportunities to support local businesses and purchase handicrafts created by local artisans.
