Why you'll love this trip
  • After spending time admiring Hoi An’s World Heritage-listed ancient town, hop on a bike and pedal beside rice fields and through small villages on a guided bicycle tour of the surrounding countryside.
  • Spend two days on Cat Ba Island relaxing on tiny beaches, hiking through verdant jungle and kayaking around karst-studded Lan Ha Bay. It’s just like Halong, but with fewer tourists!
  • Cruise around the backwater canals of the Mekong Delta – the ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam – and discover rural life and local interactions along the shores with your small group.
  • Explore the 36 streets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, as well as the Dong Xuan Market and Hoan Kiem Lake, taking in the unique mixture of French Colonial and Buddhist architecture.
  • This trip is big on connecting with the real Vietnam, and with two included homestays – one in Da Bac and one on the Mekong Delta – you can immerse yourself in everyday life.

Is this trip right for you?
  • We cover a lot of distance on this trip, including on overnight trains. Accommodation and amenities are shared and basic, but the experience of rubbing shoulders with the locals makes it all worthwhile.
  • You'll be spending two nights with local families on this trip. While during these homestays the accommodation is shared and basic, this is a great opportunity to connect with the local people (and enjoy delicious home-cooked meals!).
  • Your visit to Hoi An includes a bicycle tour of the surrounding countryside. The ride isn’t strenuous, but you will need a basic level of fitness to take part.
  • There is an included hike of up to six kilometres (almost four miles) in the countryside in Da Bac. While this hike is within the capabilities of most travellers, please let your booking agent know if you have any concerns. Good walking shoes are recommended.
  • Lots of time allocated for optional activities means freedom, flexibility and unexpected delights, but it does require a level of independence. Be sure to budget a little extra for your chosen activities, with plenty of suggestions from your leader of course!

I absolutely loved this tour! Our tour guide, Hue, made the experience so much fun and went above and beyond to ensure that we had a great experience. The mix of activities was perfect, as was the variety of places we visited. In particular I loved the bike ride in Hoi An, kayaking in Cat Ba and all of the food! I felt that I was able to get a sense of the real Vietnam because of intrepid’s focus on supporting local people and businesses. I loved the ethical focus of this trip too. As a solo traveler this trip worked really well for me, as I felt safe travelling with the group and was also able to explore on my own when I wanted to. And most importantly, I’ve made some amazing friends! I think this tour is suited to anyone who wants an authentic experience of Vietnam, has an open mind and is willing to take part in a variety of experiences - both cultural and physical. Definitely recommend!

Great tour. Covered many Vietnam highlights in a short amount of time and included places I would have never thought to visit on my own. I recommend this tour.

Amazing trip. Very well varied with lots of free time to rest or choose your own activities. Accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable. Activities were diverse and the homestays were an incredible and unique experience. You get to cover a lot of Vietnam on this trip and see the highlights.

This trip was amazing. Fantastic leader, fabulous destinations. Vietnamese people are the sweetest and kindest. The homestays are phenomenal, I wish there had been even more! Don't be afraid of the overnight train - but do take your own sleep liner for the second leg, as by that time the sheets provided would have been used by previous passengers. Also, you'd be surprised how cold it can be up in the mountains: layer up!

Our trio to Vietnam with Intrepid allowed us to experience so much more on our two weeks than we would have done on our own and our tour guide, Than, only enhanced our experience with his laid back style and availability. We leant along about using the WhatsApp platform.
