The guesthouses (Casas) we use are much nicer than your average Cuban dwelling but keep in mind that each and every room is unique. Regardless of where you stay, power cuts and breaks in hot water are sometimes unavoidable, as in any developing country.
Funds can be difficult to access in Cuba. Ideally bring multiple credit cards from several different banks just to be sure.
Luxuries such as air conditioning, and even toilet seats, are often scarce. Part of the experience here is learning to appreciate everyday Cuban resourcefulness.
Internet access can be hard to come by, and when it's available it's often unreliable and expensive. This is, on the other hand, a great opportunity to take a break from modern devices and have a true holiday.
Cuba is different, and that's a big part of its allure. Things don't always go according to plan, and many things don't work the same way as back home. Patience and good humour will go a long way in this beautiful destination.

I've been on group tours in Africa and South America but I can't remember whether they were with Intrepid. Very sorry! All tours have been good and well-conducted in my view, no matter which company. Review: Cuba is one of the least globalised and most distinctive cultures I've ever visited. The lack of globalisation might not be of much benefit to the Cubans, but the idea of 'See Cuba before it gets opened up to America once again' is, perhaps sadly, a widespread view among adventurous tourists. Cultural and political isolation since the Revolution have made Cuba a very interesting place, especially if you are a history and politics buff. The musical culture is very rich and obviously plays a central role in the social and cultural lives of Cubans - if you enjoy dancing, singing and partying, you will be in heaven! But if you prefer quiet conversation over dinner, you might not be so keen, and you might have to look around to find elusive peace and quiet. But you are sure to be impressed not just by the relaxed friendliness of Cubans, but by how adaptive and entrepreneurial they can be, and how they make the best of their limited resources.

Whether travelling alone or with a friend or partner I am sure that I will travel with Intrepid again. Travelling in a group meant that I had company and could share my experiences and having booked a single occupancy room meant that I also had space and time to myself. I have made some good friends and we may even all travel together again. I would highly recommend Intrepid for the sole traveller who wants to travel but doesn't want to do so alone.
