Why you'll love this trip
  • Soak in the dramatic and varied landscapes of lush Central America. If you’re thinking active volcanoes, idyllic beaches and emerald jungles – this trip has you covered. Nature lovers rejoice!
  • Wind your way through the otherworldly ruins of Copan in Honduras, famous for the numerous elaborate stelae. These Maya ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a perfect spot for some great pics.
  • Take part in an indigo-dying demonstration in Suchitoto (the best place to produce indigo in the world) at a local enterprise that supports working mothers in the community.
  • Hike, cycle or zip-line through the steamy cloud forests of Monteverde – there are so many ways to experience the lush canopies and see unique Central American wildlife in this natural haven.
  • Try out your Nicaragua sign language skills when you order breakfast at an atmospheric cafe housed in a historic building managed and staffed by members of the local deaf community.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, the Adelante Foundation. Donations help them empower female entrepreneurs from low-income parts of Honduras to grow their businesses and build a livelihood with microfinance.

Is this trip right for you?
  • This trip is made for travellers who value their independence but also want the benefit of a local leader and a group of like-minded travellers. The itinerary includes basic accommodation and has free time for activities when your leader will offer suggestions. Please budget spending money for optional activities you want to partake in.
  • You cover heaps of ground on this trip, with several border crossings and long travel days. This trip includes time spent travelling in a private vehicle with your group. Extra space can be tight, and conditions may feel a little cramped. Although this can be tiresome, it’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers and enjoy the picturesque scenery. This is a real Central American adventure, after all!
  • Central America is tropical, so expect a hot and humid climate. Protect yourself from the sun, wear comfortable, light clothing and stay hydrated – especially when out on walking tours. Air conditioning may not always be available in your rooms. Occasionally, properties may require an additional charge for air conditioning.
  • From walking the Costa Rican border crossing to optional full-day volcano hikes, this trip can involve a lot of walking. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes. To make the most of the trip, it's best if you have at least a moderate level of fitness.
  • There will be times when you have to walk with your luggage, and for this reason, we recommend packing light and using a backpack or something easy to carry.

This trip is an excellent way to see less-visited countries and have the opportunity to do once-in-a-lifetime activities, like volcano sandboarding. It is extremely fast with a lot of time spent on the road, so be prepared that the time spent seeing the people and landscapes from the window of a bus is part of the trip itself. Accommodations are extremely basic but hopefully the selected locations are improved by Intrepid in the future.

If you’re considering a Central American Journey - just go! Sensational experiences in amazing countries. There is no malaria or nasties to be had. People are really nice. I got lost regularly and people went out of their way to help. Pack light, no trouble with laundry. Food was delicious and your guide will make sure you eat well. I had no tummy troubles but pack meds for just in case. I am 73, with younger group and felt 30 when I got home. You know what you can do, go and have a fabulous trip!

Amazing trip though a bit fast paced at times and still a basic level. Nevertheless, what made it great was having Ben as a tour leader. I truly don’t have enough words to express my appreciation for having Ben on this tour! Ben was definitely …the cherry on top for this trip and I’ll be forever grateful for everything he has done for my Central America experience. From helping out with border crossing or even personal requests to always being approachable and share knowledge and a smile, nothing was too much for him. He has definitely set the bar really high for Intrepid’s tour leaders. I appreciate this should be more about the trip than Ben but honestly, my amazing Central America experience would not be the same without him!

Incredible trip with lots of history and adventure. A great way to experience Central America. Choko (our tour leader) was the man.

Fantastic trip, highly recommend it! 5 fascinating countries, lots to learn about the history and culture. Our tour leader Choko and the local guides were full of knowledge. Beautiful nature in the countryside, loads of great optional activities to choose from (do them all!!!) Delicious food (especially street stalls). Be prepared for long travel days and early starts, but the views from the bus are great. Wish we could have had more time in Guatemala and Honduras - I’ll just have to come back again!
