Who is Alice Morrison?

Alice Morrison in pink clothing and a blue head cover with a camel

Alice Morrison is a female adventurer and author living in Morocco. Born in Scotland, Alice went into a career in journalism before moving to Morocco in 2014. Alice has entered the Marathon Des Sables - six marathons across the Sahara in six days carrying all her own food and equipment and in 2019, became the first woman to walk the full length of the Draa River in Morocco. Alice has more recently hiked the Jordan Trail, which stretches 675 kms long from the north to the south of the country.

Alice has presented TV series and written books about her adventures. Her latest, Walking with Nomads, follows Alice and her guides on three expeditions walking from the Sahara to the Atlas Mountains – covering thousands of kilometres on foot. She lives in Imlil, a small village high in the Atlas Mountains.

Why we love this trip

  • In Marrakech, visit a local woman’s home in the Medina for a home-cooked meal and take part in a traditional cultural henna ceremony

  • Stop by Education for All, an NGO that supports girls from rural families to continue their education, supported by the Intrepid Foundation

  • Experience local life in the Atlas Mountains as you have tea with Alice on her terrace in Imlil

  • Listen to Alice’s stories as you head off for an unforgettable two full days of trekking through deep cut valleys and rugged mountains

  • Travel to the Agafay desert, go on a camel ride and sleep under the stars

Is this trip right for you?

  • This trip involves walking about 6 hours on Days 3 & 4. The walk will lead you through picturesque valleys but the terrain may be unstable in places, rocky and hilly. Consider appropriate footwear and necessary clothing, including a warm jacket and a rain coat.

  • On Days 3 & 4 of the trip you'll be staying in typical Moroccan mountain accommodation, which may include sharing rooms and basic facilities. This is a great way to experience the Amazigh (Berber) culture of the High Atlas Mountains.

Itinerary

Welcome to Marrakech! You’ll meet your group, before heading to your riad.

Tonight, you’ll enjoy a homecooked dinner with local woman Zineb. You’ll tuck into a beautiful beautiful traditional meal and hear how Zineb’s hard work and determination to provide for her children has led her to where she is today. You’ll also have the chance to take part in a traditional henna ceremony with a back group of traditional Moroccan Houariyates music.

The Houariyates are a female music band, their traditional music is inspired by the original tribes of I'Houara. Their songs are often about supporting and praising women and evoke taboo subjects such as desire and sensuality.

Throughout this trip, you’ll also be joined by Hafida Hdoubane. Hafida is a trailblazer for women in the Morocco tourism and trekking industry. She became the first certified female mountain guide in 1994 and now leads trekking tours throughout the country. She has trekked Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, too many times to count.

You’ll then travel to Imlil, a small village in the Atlas Mountains, and stop in Asni to visit Education for All. Very few girls from rural communities in the High Atlas Mountains get the opportunity to continue their education beyond primary school because most secondary schools are too far away. Education for All build and run girls’ boarding houses near secondary schools, so girls from rural families can go to school and have a brighter future.

In the late afternoon, you’ll be hosted by Alice Morrison at her house, and have tea on her terrace.
