Why we love this trip

  • Explore Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque alongside a local leader who can give you insights into the history and importance of each site

  • Visit a local NGO supported by The Intrepid Foundation that helps refugees find their feet in a new home and have the opportunity to share a delicious Syrian meal with the people who have had to flee to Turkey

  • Explore a colorful and lesser traveled neighborhood with your local leader before trying the best baklava in Istanbul

  • Change up continents and take a ferry over to the Asian side of the city for dinner

Welcome to Istanbul! Your leader will meet you in the lobby at 6.00 pm and will take you to their favorite local BBQ restaurant for welcome dinner!

  • Accommodation: Hotel

This morning, your local leader will take you to the old city of Istanbul. You will start your tour with Hagia Sophia, one of the most interesting historical site in the world, where you will be able to see ruins from Christianity and Islam at the same building. After visiting Hagia Sophia, you will get to visit Blue Mosque, Hippodrome and ruins around the historical square. You will be visiting another beautiful Ottoman ruin called Suleymaniye Mosque and then will continue to Spice Market to check out the best Turkish Delight samples in town.

In the evening, you'll travel to the Çapa district of Istanbul and visit Small Projects of Istanbul, a local NGO. With a global community of volunteers and supporters, SPI is working to provide supplemental education for displaced families through weekly Turkish language classes and a homework support club, as well as art and other activities that develop community and a new sense of belonging.

Sit down for a simple meal of Syrian cuisine – maybe moujadara (burgal, green lentils and fried onion), maklube (spiced rice, chicken, and nuts), or fetteh (rice, crispy bread, chicken, and tahini) – proudly prepared by the ladies of the center.

Talk informally with some of the brave individuals who have had to flee their home, and with the eclectic group of volunteers from Turkey, Syria, Australia, New Zealand, USA, and beyond, who give up their time to help. Afterward, we’ll journey back to the hotel by local tram.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Hotel

This morning, your local leader will take you to a very colorful area in Istanbul called Balat that is great for finding locally made souvenirs and photo opportunities. You'll grab a cup of tea/coffee or homemade lemonade at a local tea house where the old sportsmen hang out before continuing on to visit a small mosque and learn more about the religious diversity found in Istanbul. Finally, you'll visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and finish our tour after a short walk by the Golden Horn. You will have some free time in this district right after your local leader takes you to the best baklava shop in town!

In the evening, you will take the ferry to the Asian side of the city to change continents and have your farewell dinner on that side. You will enjoy the fresh seafood and drinks at a restaurant where locals hang out.
