Why you'll love this trip

  • Escape the tourist hordes and cycle through the island's heart, from the green hills of Ubud to the laidback beach towns of Lovina and Sanur.
  • Cycling’s not the only activity on offer. Take the chance to hike up Mt Batur, visit hidden caves, soak in hot springs, and enjoy some watersports on the coast.
  • As well as beautiful temples, visit less-known villages such as Trunyan, whose astounding burial tradition makes use of a mysterious ‘magic tree’.
  • Stop in at Bumi Sehat, an Intrepid Foundation project dedicated to the welfare of pregnant mothers and newborn children in the community.
  • Feast on the most authentic Balinese cuisine, prepared lovingly by unsung kitchen masters such as Lovina’s Bu Wayan.
  • Relax and unwind on the unique black sand beaches of Lovina, the perfect place to rest your bones after a few days on the bike.

Is this trip right for you?

  • To complete this trip, it is important that you are both confident and competent in riding a bicycle. This is an active trip, requiring a reasonable level of physical fitness. While there is flexibility in the distance you can elect to cycle each day, the cycling on this trip can be challenging at times, with the heat and terrain adding to the physical effort. This trip is designed for those who love to get active. While prior training may not be necessary, a moderate level of fitness will help you get the most out of the activities on this trip.
  • The optional hike to the Mt Batur crater is demanding and can vary a great deal depending on the weather. Be sure to bring strong, sturdy walking shoes. Rest assured that all camping gear will be carried by porters.
  • As a rule, the more preparation you can do for this type of trip, the more you will enjoy it. Prepare for the trip by doing aerobic type exercises before travelling - jogging or swimming are some options, though cycling is best. If possible take some extended day rides before travelling, or spend time on exercise bikes in the gym. The more your muscles (and bottom) are prepared for the riding on this trip the more you will be able to enjoy the wonderful countryside and people you meet while riding. Note that an enthusiasm for bike riding and adventure is essential!!
  • CYCLING DISTANCES: You will cycle around 19-44 miles/day. Information listed in the itinerary are a guide to the approximate distances cycled each day. However, this may vary depending on the physical capabilities of the group, and changes to local conditions. For safety reasons, we only cycle during daylight hours, so there may be some early morning starts. We take regular rest breaks throughout cycling days.

Om Swastiastu! Welcome to Ubud, the arts and cultural centre of Bali. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6PM. Afterwards, perhaps head out to Gianyar night market. It's an informal setup, but a great way to get a taste of the local culture and cuisine.

Special Information

Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask reception where the welcome meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for the welcome meeting, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details to provide to your leader.

After a briefing and bike check, set off for the first day of cycling (approx. 22 miles). Begin at Ubud Palace and head north, passing rice fields and perhaps stopping to watch as the rice is planted or harvested. Most of today's route is uphill, but there are some nice flat and downhill sections too. For lunch, dine at a restaurant run by local resident Jero Pande, who doubles as a healer for the local community. After lunch, take a break from the bike and drive to the Tirta Empul temple, located in the Tampak Siring sub regency. Here you can see Balinese folk doing their worship (remember to wear a sarong here). Tirta Empul is quite popular because of its holy water, and many people come here to bathe. On the way to back to the hotel, stop in at Bumi Sehat Foundation, an Intrepid Foundation project aimed at reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality in the community.

Start the day early and head from Ubud to Kintamani. The total distance is approximately 25 miles, but you won't cycle the whole way; the bike ride begins from Bayung Gede. The route is mostly uphill. A stop will be made for lunch at Gunung Sari Restaurant or similar. From here you can see glorious Mt Batur, as well as Lake Batur. Continue cycling to tonight's accommodation in Kedisan, Kintamani. In the afternoon, hop in a boat for a quick visit to a most unique local village, Trunyan. What sets this village apart from others is its fascinating way of dealing with the deceased; instead of the conventional Hindu tradition of cremation, bodies are put under the 'Kayu Menyan' tree which is said to absorb the odour.

Cycle from Kintamani to Bedugul today (approx. 31 miles). There's the option of climbing Mt Batur beforehand. Those that choose this optional activity will get up in very early morning (3AM) for the climb, which reaches 5,633 feet above sea level. It's quite chilly at this early hour – usually somewhere between 8°C and 12°C, so dressing in layers is essential to deal with the sharp rise in temperature later on. A 15-minute drive leads to the starting point, and the climb itself takes around two hours, with an additional 30 minutes to get to the summit if you choose (refreshments are available at the top). The sunrise rears its head at around 6:15 am, after which many cheeky monkeys show up in search of food. You can also visit the nearby cave, where the Balinese come to worship twice a year; from here you can see the steam of the crater rise. After an optional visit to local hot springs, the bike ride to Bedugul begins.

Cycle from Bedugul to Lovina today (approx. 37 miles). The track is mostly downhill and has some beautiful views to enjoy. First though, visit one of the main temples in Bali, Ulun Danu Baratan. It is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the water goddess, and ceremonies are held here in the name of water supply to Central Balinese farmers. Spend around an hour checking out the temple, then visit the traditional market near the accommodation (time permitting) – a good place to pick up a mangosteen to snack on (or a durian, for those who can handle the aroma!). Arrive in Lovina, a laidback beachside town on the northern coast. Enjoy a free afternoon, then sit down to some dinner.

Cycling Distance: 37 miles

Cycle from Lovina to Tanah Lot (approx. 25 miles). The route starts from the hotel, heading south through the heart of the island to Tanah Lot. After cycling for around 6 miles, stop and partake in some watersports. There are six kinds to choose from, so you're bound to find something to suit your tastes. After a refreshing ocean splash, arrive in Tanah Lot, visit Tanah Lot Temple (which translates literally 'island on the sea'). It's a popular but beautiful spot to see the sunset. Your accommodation tonight is a short drive from Tanah Lot.

Cycling Distance: 25 miles

Take to the saddle once again and pedal along quiet roads from Tanah Lot to Sanur (approx. 19 miles). The afternoon is at your leisure in Sanur. Stroll along the beach, take a dip in the calm waters, or grab a well-earned drink in one of the small local bars. Sanur is a convenient place from which to embark on further travel.

Cycling Distance: 19 miles

The trip comes to an end today, with no further activities planned.
