You will need a big set of crayons to fill in the colour-wheel of Oceania.
Start with every shade of red imaginable: that will probably cover the ochre rocks and rusted deserts of the Outback in Australia. For the waters of the South Pacific? Cobalt blue. But save plenty of turquoise and pale gold for the shallow sandbanks and coastal shoals of Timor and northern Queensland. Then there’s the pure white of New Zealand snow, the moss green of Tasmania's southern forests and the inky brown of a classic Melbourne espresso. Oceania is life in full colour, just the way we like it. Someone fetch us a crayon...
Driving back home means getting from A to B but driving in K’gari means a 4WD adventure through some of Australia’s most breathtaking landscapes. From admiring the coastal scenery along 75 Mile Beach Road and taking a dip in the crystal-clear waters of Boorangoora to searching for the iconic dingo among the beach’s golden sand dunes, spending all day in a car has never looked so good.
Poe Beach is waiting for you in New Caledonia, and so are the endless swimming and snorkelling opportunities it boasts. Promising to be the location of all your tropical dreams, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed site is simply stunning with its crystal-clear waters, short rainforest walks, colourful coral-filled barrier reef and fascinating marine life. You’ll never get bored here, it’s impossible.
Spectacular scenery and New Zealand go hand in hand, especially when it comes to the south island’s Milford Sound. Embark on a one-night journey aboard your very own purpose-built vessel, enjoying views of the fjord and the Tasman Sea – you might even spot a penguin or two. There’s also time for a kayaking adventure or history lesson before a delicious three-course meal with your tourmates.
Fiji’s one of the best places to sit on a sandy beach (fruity drink in hand) and relax, but it’s also one of the best places to get your heart rate up. Weave through unspoiled jungle, snorkel off faraway beaches, wander through remote villages, visit cascading waterfalls, hike over lush landscapes, learn about sacred ceremonial customs and raft through the island’s volcanic rock – all in one 8-day adventure.

I was lucky to be part of small group, me and 2 ladies (hey Ivy & Georgia). Intrepid host Grant was incredible. He had very good knowledge of nature and New Zealand. He also had excellent connections which he used to make our trip better. He for example arranged paraflight to ladies with his connections, which wasn't part of the trip. He certainly didn't watch his clock, if someone of us wanted to do something extra in the end of day he would arrange it. Our wellbeing was important to him. To top of that he has great personality & great sense of humour.

This was the perfect little tour for my first "solo" trip. Grant, our tour guide made everyone feel comfortable, he was very acknowledgeable and knew how to crack a joke to get everyone laughing. Loved the mixture of activities and ended the trip with new found friends. I would highly recommend this trip to everyone.

Oceania experiences many different climates and weather conditions, but the region generally has hot summers with little to no rainfall and colder winters. However, some exceptions exist, such as Australia with its moderately warm winters and rainy summers (in the northern parts of the country) and Fiji with its tropical and humid climate, making winter an excellent time to visit compared to the cyclones and frequent thunderstorms of its summer months (November to April).
The Oceania region encompasses several countries with different, albeit all fairly tropical, climates so it's hard to determine a single 'best' time to visit. Please see the below breakdown by country:
Australia's climate is so diverse that it can be winter, but some parts of the country (Far North Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory) experience warm weather and little rainfall. But when summer rolls around, head to New South Wales, Victoria or Tasmania for hot weather and sunny conditions.
Thanks to its tropical climate, Fiji is a year-round destination but the best time to visit for optimal weather – think blue skies and little rain – is during the dry season which runs from May to October.
There isn’t really a ‘bad time’ to visit the Cook Islands as the temperatures are balmy all year round, but the dry season between April and November (when humidity and rainfall are low) is the most popular.
The best time to visit Papua New Guinea is during the dry season when cool breezes and low humidity on the coast make temperatures comfortable.
The best time to visit Vanuatu’s southern islands is from May to October. This is generally the coolest, driest period of the year, with the cyclone season beginning in December.
As most countries in the Oceania region have tropical, warm climates (at least during summer), it's best to pack loose, lightweight clothing (think linen and cotton), appropriate sun protection such as hats, sunglasses and sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes (if you choose to explore) and sandals. You should also pack insect repellant for those pesky topical bugs, a camera to capture all of your unforgettable experiences and a day bag or backpack for when you're out and about.
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
