Tailor-made itinerary

Arrive into Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) is a dizzying contrast of ultra-modern skyscrapers, and old-fashioned temples. Here, you can choose between a luxury hotel and a tiny little guesthouse, shopping in huge malls or backstreet markets – we can guide you on all the choices you need to make, and book you extra hotel nights if you wish.

Overnight: Hoang Hai Long Hotel or similar

Meals: Dinner

A wonderful experience to start your Vietnam adventure this morning; breakfast at KOTO Restaurant, which teaches street children hospitality skills.

Next, drive to the Mekong Delta, also known as Vietnam’s Rice Bowl, for a boat trip on the myriad canals, stopping to visit some of the area’s cottage industries. This evening will be spent with the locals at a homestay – they’ll cook-up a wonderful meal of Vietnamese specialities.

Overnight: Homestay

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Waking early, you’ll head out by boat again this morning. At dawn, the floating markets of Cai Be are in full flow and the traders will delight in bartering with you for their local fruit and vegetables.

This afternoon, head back to Ho Chi Minh City for a walking tour of the main sights, including the interesting War Remnants Museum.

Overnight: Hoang Hai Long Hotel or similar

Meals: Dinner

Today, you’ll visit the Cu Chi Tunnels – stronghold of the Viet Cong during the war in the 1960s and 70s. Crawl in the small underground channels, the ones you can fit in (!), and marvel at the ingenuity of the soldiers; they made the tunnels their home with sleeping quarters, a kitchen etc.

Take an overnight train to Nha Trang – sleeper trains are a fantastic way to experience travel the local way, generally with four or six berth compartments with seats that convert into sleeping bunks. We recommend it, but, if you’d prefer, we can arrange your journey another way.

Overnight: Overnight sleeper train

Meals: Breakfast

Commonly known as the ‘Cannes of the Orient’, Nha Trang has beautiful beaches and a cosmopolitan vibe. We’ve left today free so you can soak up the sun next to the sea. If you fancy really indulging here – ask us about upgraded hotel options so you can enjoy a touch of luxury.

Overnight: Yasaka Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Today you’ll go on a boat trip to nearby islands and visit a fishing village. You’ll also have plenty of free time to go swimming and snorkelling, and you’ll be treated to a seafood buffet on the cruise.

Overnight: Yasaka Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Take a short flight and bus journey to charming Hoi An. Hoi An is a lovely town, nestled alongside a harbour with tiny, winding streets which are lined with artisan street stalls and little shops. Its 17th-century architecture has influences from Vietnam, China and Europe; the colourful bridges are especially picturesque. The most enjoyable thing to do here, we think, is to while away the hours wandering amidst the lantern-lined alleys and maybe getting yourself something very special tailored…

Overnight: Phu Thinh Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

This morning, we have included a locally-led walking tour. Your guide will explain about Hoi An’s rich trading history. This afternoon is free to relax, or explore a little further with a bike ride out to the beach or surrounding countryside.

Overnight: Phu Thinh Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

We have planned lots of time for you in Hoi An as it’s such a lovely place to relax and discover. It’s a great way to get a feel for local life. Our suggestion would be to rise early, and head to the local market to watch animated shoppers haggling over fresh fish, spices and vegetables. You could even do some shopping yourself, and we’ll then help you to arrange a Vietnamese cooking course.

One of the famous sites of Hoi An, My Son is set in a verdant valley, surrounded by hills and overlooked by the massive Cat's Tooth Mountain. We can organise a trip to the World Heritage listed temples if you wish.

Overnight: Phu Thinh Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

It’s a beautiful drive today to China Beach, across the spectacular Hai Van Pass and then to Lang Co beach for a picnic lunch (not included).

Arrive in Hue, Vietnam’s former Imperial capital. Here you’ll visit the Imperial Citadel and the Forbidden Purple City which was almost entirely destroyed by bomb blasts during the war.

Overnight: Cherish Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Take a cruise on a dragon boat along the Perfume River. You’ll stop off at the
Thien Mu Pagoda, and see an active Buddhist monastery dating back to 1601. One of the most poignant displays is a car belonging to a former monk who set himself alight to protest against the treatment of Buddhists. You’ll also visit one of the royal tombs, that of Emperor Tu Duc, with its lake, frangipani and pine trees.

A highlight of your stay in Hue is a specially-arranged visit to a Buddhist nunnery or monastery for lunch. The lunch provides economic benefits to these institutions, which rely on donations to survive, and gives you an insight into the unique traditions and food of Vietnamese Buddhism.

Overnight: Cherish Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Hanoi is Vietnam’s northern capital, its architecture a charming legacy to French and Chinese occupation. Mosey the streets of the historic Old Quarter, watch the locals practise Tai Chi by picturesque Hoan Kiem Lake and enjoy a freshly-cooked local meal at one of the street stalls. An included guided tour will take you to the Temple of Literature and One Pillar Pagoda.

Overnight: Thien Thai Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Halong Bay is a World Heritage Site, and one of Vietnam’s most beautiful places. It’s a secluded bay of emerald waters flecked with sandstone islands and caves, which you’ll explore on your cruise, in-between going for a swim. Tonight, you’ll have the unique experience of staying on a sailing junk. There are twin-share cabins and you’ll be treated to a lavish seafood buffet for lunch.

Overnight: Sailing junk

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Drive back to Hanoi for a water puppet show this evening. This Vietnamese art is a fun, engaging and local experience for your last night in Vietnam. There will also be free time for further exploration today, and we can make suggestions of how you might like to make the most of your time.

Overnight: Thien Thai Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Bid goodbye to Vietnam for your onward journey.

Frequently asked questions

On a standard group trip you travel on a set date and itinerary with other people who you may not know. A private group – whether that’s a private departure or tailor-made - is yours exclusively for your family and friends.

On a private departure, you travel on one of our 1,000+ pre-designed group trips on a date of your choice. The idea is you experience the itinerary as many others have enjoyed it before you, but sharing those special moments just between you and your friends.

A tailor-made holiday offers complete flexibility. You can choose the dates, activities, accommodation, transport, special highlights and things you’ve always wanted to see – and we will plan you an itinerary for your budget, whatever that may be.

Intrepid has 1,000+ group trips that cover most of the world. We can plan a private departure for you on most of these. There will be exceptions, usually because logistics and price make it prohibitive to offer the trip but, as a rule, we can do it!

For tailor-made, the suggested itineraries you see on our website are in our favourite destinations. We know these countries well and can deliver a fantastic, bespoke experience in each of them. Because we’re Intrepid, we also have a vast network of global suppliers and trust them to operate wonderful holidays for our customers worldwide. If you don’t see an itinerary or country on our website that you fancy, call us, and we’ll most likely be able to help you.

To and from the UK - yes, we certainly can. And we only add a nominal fee to do it. You can also book your own flights, if you wish. Those travelling from outside the UK would be best to book their own, because it’s likely to be cheaper.

For private departures, it depends on which trip you’d like to travel on. For bigger groups – eight upwards – we can often give you the itinerary at the price you see on the website. We also offer a discount for larger groups, and can include a free-of-charge place for 10+ people, so it might work out cheaper.

A tailor-made itinerary is designed to your budget, so you set the price. You tell us what you want to spend and we will do our very best to deliver your itinerary to that specification. We also have to be realistic – 5* hotels are, of course, a lot more expensive than a hostel. But we have lots of ideas, knowledge and operational experience to help you get the holiday you want at the price you want – and we’ll make suggestions to help you achieve that. For example, we might suggest using a train or local bus for one journey, rather than a private charter; that way you save money, as well as getting a fantastic local experience!

Whatever you choose. We can book anything from homestays to jungle lodges to indulgent beach properties. We always try to use locally-run, characterful properties where we can.

We use a variety of transport to suit the itinerary, destination, terrain and budget for the trip. We could take you from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang by overnight train, or plane. Hop aboard a local bus in Thailand, or sit back in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle in India. 4WDs are a great way to safari and camels are the ships of the desert. Getting there is all part of the fun.

If you’ve asked us to, we will make sure someone is there to pick you up on arrival at the airport and take you to your first accommodation. Here, your leader or guide will brief you on your itinerary. From there, Intrepid takes care of the logistics. Together with our local suppliers, we will arrange your accommodation, transport, guides and excursions, where they are included. We will smooth the way, so you can get on with enjoying your travels.

You’ll have the full backing of our 24/7 emergency contacts. The joy of a private group? As it’s just you and your friends if you do want to make a slight tweak to the itinerary along the way, such as an extra photo stop, we’ll do our best to accommodate…
