Tailor-made itinerary

Arrival into Delhi. India's capital is exciting and frenetic – split into the Old and New towns, it has mosques, museums, galleries, bazaars, palaces, forts and temples, all waiting to be explored!

Overnight: Suncourt Yatri Hotel or similar

Discover the chaos of Old Delhi on a cycle rickshaw ride through the jammed streets, close to the colour and activity of famous Chandni Chowk market. You’ll also visit Delhi’s oldest and largest mosque, Jami Masjid, as well as the Sheeshganj Gurudwara Sikh Temple.

Overnight: Suncourt Yatri Hotel or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Air-conditioned train to Agra – travel by train in India is an experience in itself. Steeped in Mughal heritage, Agra has a wealth of gardens, temples and open rooftops. Today, we have included a visit to the ornate Taj Mahal, one of the world’s greatest testimonies to love, and time to explore inside the sandstone walls of the Red Fort.

Overnight: Taj Vilas or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Today you’ll journey by a mix of public bus and private van to the heart of Rajasthan. Meet the locals and see craftspeople at work in the rural village of Bassi, before continuing to your home for the night – the lovely, and once royal, heritage property of Fort Madhogarh.

Overnight: Ford Madhogarh or similar

Meals: Breakfast, dinner

Jaipur is India’s Pink City – a fascinating mix of colourful bazaars and exquisite Rajput architecture. Stroll around the markets and shop for local, artisan goods before heading up to Amber Fort, looking down on the picturesque Maota Lake, and visit the Sheesh Mahal, whose walls are covered completely in tiny little mirrors.

Overnight: Wall Street or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Today is free for you to explore Jaipur at your leisure. Maybe take a cycle rickshaw to Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), head to the Royal City Palace or the Jantar Mantar observatory. This evening, why not experience the glitz of a Bollywood film at a local cinema?

Overnight: Wall Street or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Today brings a totally different experience with a tiger safari in the wildlife reserve of Ranthambhore National Park. Heading out by 4WD in the evening, you’ll hopefully catch sight of the mighty tiger, as well as other wildlife such as hyenas, sambar deer, macaques, caracals and Indian wild boar.

Overnight: Wall Street or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Bundi is a little place, not frequently visited by tourists and so you’ll enjoy a real Indian experience in true Intrepid-style! Navigate Bundi’s narrow streets on a walking tour; wander through the downtown market, say hello to the locals and explore the 16th-century Bundi Palace.

Overnight: Ishwari Niwas or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Take a slow train journey with local villagers to Bassi, and head to Castle Bijaipur by jeep, where you’ll spend the night. This fortified mansion is still run by the erstwhile local landlord and his family. Spend the night under the stars camping beside a lake.

Overnight: Castle Bijaipur or similar

Meals: Breakfast, dinner

A unique experience today as we will take you on an open-top jeep drive into the Rajasthan countryside. You will be accompanied by a guide, who will point out the many native animals in the area, and stop at local villages to see how the Rajasthanis live and learn about their traditions.

Overnight: Pangarh Camp or similar

Meals: Breakfast

By private vehicle to Udaipur – a popular place for artists, dancers and musicians. We have included a walking tour of the main attractions today; wandering is the best way to soak up the sights, sounds and smells in the bazaars and tiny, winding alleys – your local guide will show you the best, hidden spots of this charming city.

Overnight: Pichola Haveli or similar

Meals: Breakfast

Visit Udaipur’s City Palace, one of the largest royal palaces in India. Enjoy an optional boat ride on the famous Lake Pichola and marvel at the island palaces off Jag Nivas and Jag Mandir. In the evening, perhaps enjoy a traditional concert that combines seven traditional Rajasthani folk dances.

Frequently asked questions

On a standard group trip you travel on a set date and itinerary with other people who you may not know. A private group – whether that’s a private departure or tailor-made - is yours exclusively for your family and friends.

On a private departure, you travel on one of our 1,000+ pre-designed group trips on a date of your choice. The idea is you experience the itinerary as many others have enjoyed it before you, but sharing those special moments just between you and your friends.

A tailor-made holiday offers complete flexibility. You can choose the dates, activities, accommodation, transport, special highlights and things you’ve always wanted to see – and we will plan you an itinerary for your budget, whatever that may be.

Intrepid has 1,000+ group trips that cover most of the world. We can plan a private departure for you on most of these. There will be exceptions, usually because logistics and price make it prohibitive to offer the trip but, as a rule, we can do it!

For tailor-made, the suggested itineraries you see on our website are in our favourite destinations. We know these countries well and can deliver a fantastic, bespoke experience in each of them. Because we’re Intrepid, we also have a vast network of global suppliers and trust them to operate wonderful holidays for our customers worldwide. If you don’t see an itinerary or country on our website that you fancy, call us, and we’ll most likely be able to help you.

To and from the UK - yes, we certainly can. And we only add a nominal fee to do it. You can also book your own flights, if you wish. Those travelling from outside the UK would be best to book their own, because it’s likely to be cheaper.

For private departures, it depends on which trip you’d like to travel on. For bigger groups – eight upwards – we can often give you the itinerary at the price you see on the website. We also offer a discount for larger groups, and can include a free-of-charge place for 10+ people, so it might work out cheaper.

A tailor-made itinerary is designed to your budget, so you set the price. You tell us what you want to spend and we will do our very best to deliver your itinerary to that specification. We also have to be realistic – 5* hotels are, of course, a lot more expensive than a hostel. But we have lots of ideas, knowledge and operational experience to help you get the holiday you want at the price you want – and we’ll make suggestions to help you achieve that. For example, we might suggest using a train or local bus for one journey, rather than a private charter; that way you save money, as well as getting a fantastic local experience!

Whatever you choose. We can book anything from homestays to jungle lodges to indulgent beach properties. We always try to use locally-run, characterful properties where we can.

We use a variety of transport to suit the itinerary, destination, terrain and budget for the trip. We could take you from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang by overnight train, or plane. Hop aboard a local bus in Thailand, or sit back in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle in India. 4WDs are a great way to safari and camels are the ships of the desert. Getting there is all part of the fun.

If you’ve asked us to, we will make sure someone is there to pick you up on arrival at the airport and take you to your first accommodation. Here, your leader or guide will brief you on your itinerary. From there, Intrepid takes care of the logistics. Together with our local suppliers, we will arrange your accommodation, transport, guides and excursions, where they are included. We will smooth the way, so you can get on with enjoying your travels.

You’ll have the full backing of our 24/7 emergency contacts. The joy of a private group? As it’s just you and your friends if you do want to make a slight tweak to the itinerary along the way, such as an extra photo stop, we’ll do our best to accommodate…
