Discover the laid-back delights of Laos, Bangkok and Vientiane
In Thailand discover a country where ancient and modern collide to create the glorious chaos of Bangkok and the cultural heritage of Chiang Mai. In Laos you’ll find a land that holds to the simple traditions that have slipped away elsewhere and where the languid pace of life is eternally contagious. Explore, relax and absorb the distinct atmosphere of these two fascinating countries that sit either side of the massive Mekong River. Food, history, culture, stunning landscapes and endlessly friendly locals await on this journey through two gems of South East Asia.
Enjoy plenty of time in Laos rather than just travelling through as part of a longer Indochina trip
This is a no-fuss, no-hurry holiday. Laos is one of the most relaxed countries around, and the pace of this trip is the same, with plenty of free time to choose your own options in each destination
There are many chances to do good while you travel, from the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre to social enterprise restaurants like Friends International and Makphet
Make one of Southeast Asia's classic journeys – a slow-boat trip down the Mekong River
Get a good taste of Thailand, with time in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Chiang Khong
This being a Basix trip, there are minimal inclusions. This, however, means more free time to make your own discoveries.
The accommodation is mostly simple – some rooms will have air conditioning, some rooms will have a fan.
Without many inclusions, you will need to bring extra spending money to take part in activities and for lunches and dinners. It's hard to give a guide on how much you will need, as everyone is different. But if you are on a budget, there are are plenty of free or inexpensive activities, such as temple visits, tuk-tuk transport, river and countryside walks and local markets.
The unhurried pace of Laos can mean that things don't always go to plan. Buses can break down, journeys can take longer than expected, and guesthouse rooms are sometimes not ready on arrival. The key to enjoying Lao's laid-back atmosphere is patience!
It can get colder than you might expect in northern Laos in January, with an average temperature of 16° C, so you'll need some warm clothes if travelling at that time.
The roads between Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang offer breathtaking views, but the catch is that there are a lot of twists and turns. Those prone to motion sickness should purchase some over-the-counter medication to prepare.

Expect to be amazed.. Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia are four of the most amazing places I've ever had the pleasure of visiting, and this Trip had me re-visiting Vietnam for a 2nd time. Every time I've visited this region I've come away feeling energized and Inspired by the people I've met and the things I've seen, so.... Yeah, expected to be amazed. And expect to have your preconceptions blown. These places may have dark streaks in their history but the people and places are bright and beautiful.
