Japan is full of the contrasts of ultra modern (robot restaurant anyone?) and ancient tradition (just step into any of Kyoto’s stunning temples). While brief, this trip will introduce you to all facets of this fascinating country.
With a leader to show you around, a new group of friends to explore with and plenty of free time to do exactly what interests you most about the country, you will definitely be able to make the most of each day on this trip.
The little town of Nikko is one of our favourite destinations, packed with World Heritage listed temples, picture perfect hiking trails, and one of the best places to experience an onsen – hot springs bath.
Eat your way from Tokyo to Kyoto with chances to try all kinds of sumptuous street food, sake, snacks and surprises, including the best sushi of course! Some tips on all the very best to eat and drink are here: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/eat-and-drink-like-a-local-in-...
Even getting from A to B is fun in Japan! Ride the shinkasen bullet train and make use of day passes for local public transport to get to and from the activities you choose in each destination. Here's why train travel in Japan is something we just don't want you to miss: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/japan-trains/
As this is a Basix style trip, expect simple accommodation, included public transport and plenty of free time to pack in the optional activities.
With planning and a bit of know-how Japan doesn't have to be expensive. Check out some tips for budget travellers here: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/japan-budget-travel-guide/
Your leader will take you on orientation walks in each destination, giving you tips on things like supermarkets, places to eat and ATMs and recommendations of fun things to see and do. For more in depth exploration you can head off on your own or with other members of your group, or for the days we are in Kyoto and Tokyo, book one of our excellent Urban Adventures day tours. If you are interested in an itinerary with more inclusions, please see our “Land of the Rising Sun” (CJST) trip.
In some destinations you may be staying in a ryokan, which is a Japanese-style inn. It’s a great taste of tradition, however not everyone finds futon matresses on the tatami mat floor, tiny bathrooms and proximity to other guests as comfortable as more western-style hotels and beds.

1. This trip does not include a Japan Rail Pass. You will need to buy your own train tickets for any independent rail travel you wish to do in Japan pre or post tour.
2. Due to the rapid increase in tourism in Japan and in the lead up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics it has been necessary to go outside our traditional tour leader sources. As a result our passionate, professional and trained tour leaders may be local Japanese or long term foreign residents in Japan.
3. We are currently unable to book pre or post tour accommodation at our start & finish point hotels due to limited room availability. We recommend booking a hotel of your choice through an online booking engine if you are planning to stay longer in Japan.
Our Japan Express trips score an average of 4.61 out of 5 based on 88 reviews in the last year.
The Japan Express is a good name for it. The trip moves fast - not as fast as the shinkansen ride you will take, but fast. You will probably have a full and lively experience checking out urban (and some rural), contemporary Japan. In Tokyo, there will be crowds and energy and great food (and surprising little islands of serenity.) Nikko will open your eyes to the fact that Japan is a mountainous land with much natural beauty. The rivers, waterfalls, and mountains will show you why the Japanese continue to worship nature. Kyoto may not grab you at first, but after a few delicious meals, a couple of unforgettable temples and shrines, and a look at some of the natural beauty that surrounds the city, you will probably become a fan.

I've written most of this throughout my review however one more thing would be to say that where the website says to have a hiking bag instead of suitcase couldn't be more wrong. My family was the only ones to have packs instead of suitcases and it was awful for us as the rest of the tour were much happy with suitcases which is the complete opposite of what the website says.
