Like the saying goes, 'families that sweat together, stay together’ (or something like that).

There are many benefits of doing an active trip with your family: someone to make sure you stay hydrated, someone who’s got the sunscreen covered, someone to give you a foot massage. Ok, maybe not the last one. But it’s these reasons why we offer active trips exclusively for families. Whether it’s heart-pounding Pyrenees, pulse-racing Peru, or lung-pumping Nepal, there’s an active trip perfect for you and your loved ones.

Why choose Intrepid

Just for families

The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip.

Travel with other families

Travelling the Intrepid way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Small group sizes

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

Action packed

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Safety first

Our leaders are specially trained to run family adventures, so you’re well taken care of. You can also rest easy knowing we conduct safety assessments on all our activities to meet local standards as well as our own comprehensive safety policy.

Sustainable travel

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.

Highlights

Pessons Lakes, Andorra

For one of Europe’s tiniest countries, Andorra packs a serious punch when it comes to outdoor adventure, thanks to the Pyrenees mountains. Clock the views from the glorious summit of Pic Maia and descend along an idyllic lake trail, stopping to swim in Siscaro Lakes for a swim as griffon vultures circle above.

Tirta Gangga, Bali

One of the pearls of up-and-coming East Bali, this maze of pools and fountains is set in a former royal palace and surrounded by a lush garden and beautiful stone carvings. The countryside and rice fields behind it are a place to learn about the great importance of water and agriculture to the local Balinese.

View trip

Inca Trail, Peru

Hiking through the Andes to the ruined Inca city of Machu Picchu is almost a rite of passage for backpackers in South America. Conquer the ancient Inca Trail and you'll see the Inca sites of Huillca, Raccay and Llactapata as well as incredible views of snow-capped Veronica Peak.

View trip

Sava Dolinka, Slovenia

The sparkling green Sava Dolinka is a headwater of the Sava River, which runs diagonally across the whole of Slovenia. It’s a whitewater rafter’s dream. Fun but not-too-furious rapids lead past alpine scenery and cypress trees, with giant moss-covered boulders paving the way downriver to Lancovo.

Where we stay

Accommodation is important, especially when you’re spending your days hiking, kayaking, rafting, zip-lining, swimming, snorkelling or cycling. Our Active Family Holidays use lodgings that provide the best possible experience of a destination – whether it’s an atmospheric Himalayan guesthouse with panoramic views, a family-run chalet in the middle of the Pyrenees mountains or a local homestay in the Peruvian Andes.

Mountain gite, Morocco

Enjoy an evening with a Berber family in Aroumd, a town perched on a hill in the Mizane Valley in the High Atlas Mountains. An overnight stay and a dose of warm local hospitality in a gite (a fun and cosy Berber abode) is just what the doctor ordered after a downhill mountain biking adventure.

Seti River camp, Nepal

The mountain trails of Nepal can be challenging, so take a load off between hikes with some camping on the shores of the Seti River. Pitch the tent on a white sandy beach for an evening of riverside relaxation, surrounded by mountains that feel close enough to touch.
