Spend your spookiest Halloween ever in haunting Romania
Even without its bloodcurdling myths of Dracula, werewolves, haunted castles and gypsy curses, Romania is an atmospheric destination. And no more so on the spooky holiday of Halloween. Let us introduce you to the beauty of ancient Bucharest, the fortified town of Sibiu, the old-world charm of Biertan, the blood, err… wine of Medias, the haunting beauty and mythology of Sighisoara, a local family in Viscri and Bran Castle (aka Dracula’s castle) in Brasov. For a spine-tingling adventure this Halloween, don’t look past this adventure in Transylvania. Mwahahaha.
Transylvania conjures up images of haunted castles, gothic churches and vampires. Where better to spend Halloween than in the 12th-century town of Sighisoara, the birthplace of Count Dracula? Things are about to get medi-evil
Visit Biertan’s 15th-century fortified church, equipped to withstand long sieges and shelter the whole village in times of war. There’s even a ‘matrimonial prison’ where couples wanting to divorce were subjected to the Middle Ages’ idea of marriage counselling
A homestay with in the traditional Saxon village of Viscri exposes you to Romanian hospitality and some finger-licking home-cooked food
Delve into the communist past and the thriving, artistic present-day vibe of Bucharest, a city often underrated by travellers. The grand architecture of the 1980’s Palace of the Parliament is particularly awe-inspiring
As potholes and cobblestones are common in Eastern Europe, we recommend you leave your wheelie bag at home and bring a backpack instead for ease of travel.
Autumn weather in Romania can be cooler than expected, especially at higher altitude. Please consider the time of year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
Single travellers will be sharing accommodation with another traveller of the same sex. If you'd prefer a single room, a supplement is available at an additional charge. Please ask your travel consultant for more details. Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together if you'd like to get cosy. Also, please note that many hotels and guesthouses only offer shared bathrooms rather than en-suite facilities.

Romania is a fascinating country and the trip through Transylvania highlighted many aspects of this country and its interesting history. It was certainly one of the more relaxing trips I've done with Intrepid and it was great to have time to wander in the beautiful towns and explore the castles and churches. The homestay was a real highlight - amazing food and a really fun night around the fire! The accommodation was comfortable and very well located and it was great to have breakfast included everyday. Vlad, our leader really made the tour - he was organised, professional, knowledgeable and really friendly. I'd definitely recommend this tour - just make sure you take warm clothes!!
