The primary means of transportation on this trip is by train. Trains are a fast way to cross long distances, allowing you to avoid traffic jams and arrive right into the city centre. They are comfortable and all have toilets, however can sometimes be quite busy. Please note that you'll have to carry your own luggage on and off the train, so make sure it doesn’t exceed our weight and size recommendations. You can find this information in the 'What to Take' section of the trip notes. Please also note that often there are no lifts or escalators in train stations or in the hotel, so you will have to carry your bags up and down the stairs yourself.
Summer temperatures can be very high in many of the regions visited (over 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s important to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat, and drink plenty of water. Also, many hotel rooms are not equipped with air-conditioning. Please carefully consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.
As accommodation on this trip is twin-share, single travellers will share a room with another traveller of the same sex. If you’d prefer not to share, a single room supplement is available at an additional charge. Please ask your travel consultant for more details, and please note that in some hotels a single supplement exclusion applies where single rooms are not available. Hotels in Europe often don't have double beds, but rather two single beds that can be pushed together. This trip is a great opportunity to get to know other travellers, so embrace it while you can. Please note that some hotels on this trip offer shared bathrooms only, as opposed to en-suite facilities. Also, rooms can seem rather small by American or Australian standards, and instead of double beds there can be 2 single beds that can be pushed together.
A Single Supplement is available on this trip, please ask your booking agent for more information. The price of the Single Supplement doesn't include the following nights where single rooms may not be available. If a single room becomes available at check-in for these nights, there may be the option to upgrade to a single room and pay the surcharge locally for that night:
- Days 2-5 Lucca
- Days 6-7 La Spezia
- Days 12-14 Swiss Alps
You don't have a lot of time in Rome and Paris at the start and the end of the trip respectively, so if you're keen to explore these spectacular cities in depth, we recommend you arrive a day or two before the start of the trip and/or extend your stay at the end.
Our Rome to Paris trips score an average of 4.78 out of 5 based on 37 reviews in the last year.
This trip was fantastic. Just the right amount of time in each destination. Our guide was brilliant and I would definitely recommend small group travel. Such a shame Intrepid aren't going to continue this tour :(

I will definitely travel with Intrepid again. As a first time traveller, the level of planned and free time was a great mix so that I could find my feet with a little bit of guidance from a fantastic group leader. My only tip to other travellers would be to embrace every little difference in the countries you visit. That’s why we travel.
