Experience the spectacular 2018 World Nomad Games in Kyrgyzstan
Yurts, mountains, canyons, waterfalls, alpine lakes, Soviet history, legendary hospitality – these are just the tip of the iceberg on this special Kyrgyzstan expedition. Starting in Bishkek, take the adventure to the next level with three days at the famous World Nomad Games, a spectacle quite literally worthy of Steven Seagal – or perhaps it is the other way around. This unique annual event celebrates the nomadic heritage of Central Asia with a slew of competitive sports you never knew existed: horseback ‘goat polo’, stick wrestling, bone-throwing, eagle hunting and more. It largely takes place near the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul, with the dramatic Ala-Too mountains as a backdrop. Suffice it to say this is an Intrepid adventure that more than lives up to its name.
Experience for yourself the legend that is Central Asian hospitality, with stays in local homes and guesthouses, and plenty of home cooked meals
Stay overnight in yurts at beautiful Son-Kol, where nomadic herdsmen watch over their flocks of sheep and goats
Travel round the shores of Issyk-Kul, the largest alpine lake in Asia and second largest in the world
Enjoy hikes through canyons and to waterfalls in Jeti-Oguz, Baskoon and the ‘Valley of the Fairytales’
Marvel at the skill and bravery of the competitors at the World Nomad Games, a fierce but festive celebration of Central Asia’s age-old nomadic culture
Discover unique sports you won’t find at the Olympics, and probably not on television either. There’s kok buru, a kind of polo played with a goat carcass; toguz korgol, a traditional board game; and mas-wrestling, best described as a tug of war over a stick
Kyrgyzstan is a remote destination, perfect for intrepid travellers in the true sense of the word! You will venture well away from cities, right off the beaten track, through stunning landscapes and staying in local communities.
Accommodation may be more basic than what you are used to, with limited and often shared facilities. Central Asia is known for its amazing hospitality, and the homestays and guesthouses on this trip are no exception.
There will be some long days of driving, often over rough terrain, which can be tiring and require patience. Take the chance to sit back, marvel at the scenery and embrace the journey as well as the destination.
The main location for the Games is outdoors in an open meadow, so be prepared for changes in weather and wear footwear that can tolerate a bit of mud if it gets rainy.
The Games are a relaxed event. While there is a schedule, it’s not uncommon for it to change daily, with events starting earlier or delayed for a day or two.
