Travel to Bali and visit Indonesia's beautiful island getaway
Travel to Bali and discover Indonesia's beautiful island escape. Dotted with small, character-filled villages, smouldering volcanoes rising out of lush rich fields, idyllic beaches and colourful reefs, Bali is the perfect island getaway. Conquer the slopes of simmering Mt Batur, explore an underwater world in Bali Barat National Park, feast on delicious Balinese cuisine and enjoy moments of absolute peace in Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, a Hindu-Buddhist lake temple dedicated to the goddess of the waters. Fall in love with the warmth of the people, the ornate customs and welcoming culture that is synonymous with beautiful Bali.
With hiking, cycling and snorkelling, this trip is steeped in outdoor activities. But there's also plenty of time to relax – bathe in hot springs, laze on the beach or stroll around botanical gardens
Immerse yourself in Balinese culture – you'll eat street food with locals, meet songket weavers, witness a traditional Kecak dance performance and visit a Hindu-Buddhist island temple
Adventure to the summit of Mt Batur, where, on a clear morning, dazzling sunrise vistas stretch across the Lombok Strait, all the way over to the peaks of Mt Rinjani
Escape the tourists – and the heat – in Sidemen, a lovely, peaceful village nestled in the hills
A good level of fitness is essential, as there are a range of physical activities included (cycling from Ubud, walking up Mt Batur at sunrise, and snorkelling in Bali Barat National Park).
There is one very early start – your sunrise climb of Mt Batur kicks off at 3 am. This means you'll be walking over some gravel and volcanic rock in the dark. Head torches, warm clothing and good walking shoes are a must. The view at sunrise is well worth the effort, especially if the weather's fine!
We visit villages and small towns on this trip, where life is more conservative than in the tourist areas. You will need to bring clothes that allow your shoulders and knees to be covered for both men & women. At some hot springs you will need to wear a t-shirt and shorts over your swimwear.
Bali is blessed with a consistent climate for most of the year. However, the rainy season (usually October–March) brings frequent downpours. The good news is that these rainy bursts don't last long, and it is usually still warm.

The Beautiful Bali trip is AMAZING, you will see a wide spectrum of Bali life while also engaging in many exciting activities. Def do the optional hot springs after Mt Batur, this was a trip highlight! I recommend adding a day or two at the beginning to give yourself a chance to adjust to time difference, and because Ubud has a LOT to see. Oh and you don’t need to use backpack, rolling suitcase works just fine and is likely easier for this trip.

Not for other travellers - but for yourself - the second part of my trip (the Lombok and Gili Islands section) was cancelled understandably due to the earthquake. I thought it took Intrepid a long time to cancel this trip despite the evident destruction the earthquake had made, as well as UK foreign office advise that we should not travel there. In the end, it was quite a rush arranging other accommodation / plans for the second week of my trip. As the flights had all been paid, annual leave arranged with work etc, rescheduling for another date was not practical. It took a while for the refund to be confirmed (and I was thankful that my tour company did the leg work to get this). It would have been kind for intrepid to try to help with those whose trip had been cancelled with advising about other options eg other intrepid tours which we could have joined after Bali (Komodo Island?), suggestions of other locations to visit and the hotels which we could use, to make this rearrangement easier and less stressful. I felt once the trip was cancelled intrepid 'washed their hands of me' and their responsibility towards me in helping me organise the rest of the tour. (the tour company I used only uses 'exclusive' resorts which were expensive, especially last minute, and so I was left trawling through booking.com etc to find alternative accommodation which to be honest wasn't the best in the end).
