Why you'll love this trip

  • Bardia National Park is one of the best places in the world for spotting the elusive Royal Bengal tiger in the wild. Be taken on daily safaris in search of the unique wildlife of the region.

  • Keep your eye out for other wildlife that call this park home – Asian elephants, one-horned rhinos, deer, fresh-water dolphins, crocodiles, and rare birds like the kingfisher.

  • Bardia National Park, in Nepal’s southwest, is far from the usual tourist trail and remote enough to feel like you’re deep on a wildlife expedition.

  • Discover the local cultures of the region with a visit to a local Tharu village to learn about the way of life in this region of rural Nepal.

Is this trip right for you?

  • This is a join-in trip rather than a scheduled group trip, so if other travellers have booked on the same date you will share included activities, but you may also be lucky enough to have the trip all to yourself.

  • While there will be opportunities to spot many different kinds of wildlife, sightings cannot be guaranteed as this is a national park where animals are free to roam rather than a zoo or wildlife park.

  • During your time in Bardia, you may come across the local elephant 'sanctuary' located outside of the national park. Intrepid Travel has a strong elephant welfare policy and we only endorse visiting facilities involving wild animals in captivity if the rationale for the sanctuary operation is in the best interests of the animals involved and if the rescue centre is operating with the highest animal welfare and conservation standards possible. Unfortunately, this sanctuary does not meet our standards, and as such we strongly discourage travellers from visiting this establishment. See the Responsible Travel section for more information.

Itinerary

Namaste! Welcome to Nepal. Please meet at our Kathmandu office, which is listed in the trip notes, the day prior to departure at 5 pm for a meeting.

This morning you'll take a morning flight to Nepalgunj (approximately 2 hours) – try and snatch a window seat, because on a clear day, you’ll be able to marvel at the mighty Himalayan mountain range below. On arrival, you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to your hotel, located on the fringe of Bardia National Park (approximately 2.5 hours). Once you’ve checked in and freshened up, take a tour with your local guide through a Tharu village nearby, where you’ll learn a little bit more about the lifestyle of this ethnic group from the southern foothills of the Himalayas. Afterwards, come together for a wildlife information session to learn about the national park and the animal kingdom you’ll be exploring in the next coming days!

After breakfast, embark on a safari with a local guide and expert tiger tracker. Today is an excellent opportunity to see the Royal Bengal tiger out in the wild. It is estimated that no more than around 250 of these tigers still roam free in Nepal, however Bardia National Park is home to a large proportion of these. Keep your eye out for these, as well as the rare one-horned rhinos, peacocks, Asian elephants, kingfisher birds, marsh mugger and gharial crocodiles, deer and wild boar.

This morning is an ideal opportunity to see rare birds in their natural habitat, including the colourful kingfisher. While walking along the Karnali River, try to spot one of the critically endangered gangetic fresh-water dolphins. Chances are low, but if you were to see one, it would be here.
