Why you'll love this trip
  • Embark on a cycling trip through the backcountry of Yogyakarta. A world of flower-studded fields and smiling locals, this cultural centre is one of South East Asia’s standout destinations.
  • Take a guided walk through the jungle and rice paddies of Seloliman Nature Reserve, then sit back, relax and soak up the ambience under the stars as a small group.
  • Climbing Mt Bromo in the early hours of the morning is an adventure to remember. If the conditions are right, you'll be rewarded with a dazzling view over mist-laden volcanoes.
  • Get behind the scenes of some of Java's fascinating local industries – from coffee, cocoa and palm sugar to traditional Javanese medicine of jamu.
  • Balance out all of the activity and adventure with plenty of time to chill out away from the crowds at beachside paradise of Pemuteran on Bali’s less-visited north coast.
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll learn about our Intrepid Foundation partner, Coral Triangle Center Foundation. Donations help expand their coral restoration project and support their educational outreach activities for local schools in Nusa Penida. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Is this trip right for you?
  • Java is one of the largest islands in Indonesia, and this trip covers a lot of ground. Travel times can be long, and delays are common. Where suitable, you'll travel by train instead of drive, which will make the journey more comfortable. Please read the itinerary carefully for travel time estimates.
  • It's important not to make your bags too heavy, as you will be expected to carry them onto and off trains, and walk them short distances. Porters are available in most stations at an extra charge.
  • This trip involves a fair amount of hiking and cycling. A moderate level of fitness will help you to get the most out of this trip. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes.
  • Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. That way you get the most out of your interactions with local people and environments. Dress standards in Java are more conservative than in other areas of Indonesia. Show your respect by covering your knees and shoulders when visiting temples. It's a great idea to bring your own sarong, or purchase one on your way.
  • Accommodation at Seloliman Nature Reserve and near Mt Bromo is in basic guesthouses. Set on the edge of a tropical forest the Seloliman Reserve embraces philosophies of environmental education, and we are sure you will get a good night’s sleep.
  • You may also want to check out our Best of Indonesia (TISSC) if you have longer time to explore in ‘country.

Choice in hotels/homestays could be better. We were placed in 1-3 star eco lodge while there are better ones and economical ones out there. Overall good experience/tour but if hotels can be better, and our free meals can be hot I would give this tour a 5 star. You can be comfortable in south east Asian country

Overall the trip was excellent to good. Leader was very thoughtful and helpful. There are areas that need improvement like choice in 1-3 star eco hotels (there are many complaints as I read the reviews after the fact). Somehow this trip was overpriced considering the hotels we were placed in. The minivan could be larger for a group of 12-half of whom had long legs, I’m short and I was uncomfortable at times. Better ways to deal with sick passengers while we are crammed into a minivan (hand them a mask or something) While some were thoughtful, others need a gentle reminder.

Intrepid’s tour of Java was well organized. Accommodations were comfortable; local guides did a good job teaching us about Javanese local industries; lots of exciting fun too, like peering into active volcanos, swimming in canyon gorge, etc., and above all, our tour leader was kind, knowledgeable, and great fun to be with.

Nova was very patient, helpful and knowledgeable. Intrepid has to do better with the choice in hotels (1-3star). The bus could also be a bit bigger for the long stretch. I paid single supplement and must have been the luck of the draw. In the 3 rooms i was assigned to the deposit box was not working, toilet not flushing and kettle was dirty(Kubuku). Intrepid was chosen due to small group.
