There are a couple of long travel days on this departure, which can be tiresome but offer a quintessential Indian experience.
Southern India can get very hot during the summer so remember to drink lots of water, wear skin protection and bring a variety of clothing – light cotton fabrics work best in the heat.
You will travel by local bus on this trip. While conditions are basic, this is a great way to rub shoulders with the locals while enjoying the passing scenery.
You will visit some temples on this trip, which requires a certain level of modesty. Please bring clothes that cover the arms and pants/skirts that go past the knees. A light scarf is also a good idea for covering shoulders and arms when it’s hot.
Accommodation in the backwaters of Kerala is a multi-share homestay, so be prepared to share space (along with stories and a delicious home-cooked meal).
From April 2017, the main dome of the Taj Mahal will undergo mud pack therapy to restore its original colour. It is expected the dome will be covered in iron scaffolding during the process which is expected to last a year.

South India was a revelation for me, as I had no idea how different and how culturally rich it would be. I've spent lots of time in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia and now see the powerful cultural influence of South India on the surrounding countries. The food, the lavish, mysterious temples and the wonderful Kerala "Backwater" region, kind of a crazy dream of canals, rice fields, water lilies, birdlife, obedient ducks and relaxing accommodation all made this a really fun tour. Santo, our tour leader, worked hard, in an easy-going way, to makes sure we had a great time.

Do this trip - not only is it an absolute delight exploring the food of southern India with demonstrations and participation classes, but you also get the culture - the temples at Madurai being the highlight and you get the countryside - the waterways of Kerala being the highlight here.
