How Your Trip Makes a Difference
Your dollars support three inspiring projects in Asia: Friends of the Asian Elephant, an elephant sanctuary and hospital in Thailand; Small Projects Istanbul, a clothing and accessories brand run by Syrian refugees in Turkey; and Friends-International, a social enterprise in Cambodia that teaches marginalized youth skills to help build careers in hospitality.
Intrepid Foundation Projects Your Dollars Will Support
Friends of the Asian Elephant
Friends of the Asian Elephant was established to protect and conserve the welfare of elephants in Thailand. FAE’s elephant hospital provides free medical care for sick and injured elephants, as well as education for keepers. Its Mobile Vets Project sends teams to Northern Thailand to diagnose and treat elephants. It also works collaboratively with other organizations to advocate for elephant welfare. We are one of 160 travel companies who no longer offer elephant rides on our trips after learning about abuse.
4,500+ sick and injured elephants have been treated since 1993
82 elephants received treatment from FAE’s Mobile Vets Project
100% of donations go towards Friends of the Asian Elephant initiatives
Small Projects Istanbul
By supporting this organization, you are helping Syrian refugees get back on their feet. SPI offers 40+ programs a week that aim to improve the skills of women and their children toward brighter futures.
Children participate in childcare, language and psychosocial support to better cope and integrate into mainstream Turkish schools. Meanwhile, their mothers take part in the Women's Skills Development Program which transfers entrepreneurial, leadership, and technical handicraft skills in conjunction with their social enterprise, in which the participants gain a livelihood.
3.7 million Syrian refugees have fled to Turkey
130 families benefit from participation in SPIs programs
60 women participate in the social enterprise program
Friends-International’s holistic approach to helping communities begins with protecting children. It provides them with resources and opportunities so they can overcome barriers and become productive members of their community. Friends does this through community outreach, family and school reintegration, vocational training and drug prevention and treatment. Their programs also assist with housing and income-generating social businesses.
1,400 youth received vocational training in 2015
8,000 parents supported to better care for their children
34,000 people have benefited from Friends' programs and services
