See Lac Assal and Ardoukoba Volcano as you hike, snorkel and swim through Djibouti.
With its mix of hiking and snorkelling, this trip is not for the faint hearted. However, if you want to experience life like a nomad as we traverse the Djibouti landscape, float on one of the world’s saltiest lakes and go in search of whale sharks then this trip is right up your alley. The scenery is diverse and spectacular, passing everything from volcanoes, hot springs and salt flats to beaches and forests. Hikes to Lac Assal, Ardoukoba Volcano and Foret du Day National Park are rewarded with free time on the beach at Plage des Sables Blancs and sleeping “Belles Étoiles” (under the stars) at Allouli.

This trip requires a good level of fitness. You’ll be getting out and about on several hikes (noted in the itinerary), which range from 4 kilometres to 12 kilometres. They’re not necessary overly technical, but the conditions will be testing.
Some nights will be spent sleeping 'belle etoile', which means “under the stars”. Despite the elegant name, this is camping at its most basic. You’ll be on military-style cots without a tent over your hed. But hey…that’s what adventures are made of!
We’ve put a lot of research into putting this new trip together, however that doesn’t mean it will run perfectly. In fact, because it’s brand new we expect a few bumps along the way. But in our experience, we find that if you keep an open mind and flexible attitude you’ll discover that a little detour here and there can make things more interesting. However, if this is something that concerns you then we recommend holding off and booking this trip in another year or so when the kinks are ironed out.
This itinerary is valid for departures from 01 January 2019 to 31 December 2019. View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2017 - 31 December 2018

The standard of health facilities in Djibouti's capital is limited and very basic to non-existent in outlying regions. Medicines are sometimes unavailable in rural areas and can be expensive. In the event of a serious illness or accident, medical evacuation (at considerable expense) to a destination with appropriate facilities would be necessary.
A thermarest mattress is required to make the camping nights more comfortable
A single supplement is available for the nights in Djibouti City only.
Our Djibouti's Footsteps of the Afar trips score an average of 4.86 out of 5 based on 7 reviews in the last year.
You will see Djibouti at its best on this trip. Be prepared for some basic camping but also some amazing experiences such as seeing whale sharks, walking through a barren forest and up a volcano! Be prepared, it is very dusty, hot and rough at times, the copious food will surprise you.

Djibouti is a tiny country with extremely interesting, harsh but breathtakingly beautiful desert and volcanic landscape which makes for great travelling but it is worth being very fit and ready for adventure. The people are delightful and very welcoming.
