When you\u2019re not crunching over ice, you\u2019ll kayak in bays filled with orcas and sea lions, camp deep in Denali National Park and enjoy some good ol\u2019 Alaskan hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Dive into Fiji\u2019s tropical landscapes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Landlocked between France and Spain, tiny Andorra<\/a> is the perfect example of good things coming in small packages. It might only be 468 square kilometers (180 square miles) \u2013 that’s about a third of the size of Los Angeles \u2013 but it punches well above its weight when it comes to stunning landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In winter, it boasts some of Europe\u2019s best ski slopes, but when the snow melts come summer, it offers even more adrenalin-fuelled fun, like cycling the Iron Route, zip-wiring through the treetops in Cortals Valley and hiking to Ransol Ridge for epic photo ops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Ride Lucca\u2019s medieval ramparts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trip: <\/strong>Cycle Tuscany<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say arrivederci<\/em> to the tourists of Florence and Pisa and ciao<\/em> to the quieter streets of Lucca. Located at the foothills of the Apuan Alps, Lucca is a medieval city with all the restaurant-lined alleys, grand piazzas and impressive churches of Italy<\/a>\u2019s most famous cities \u2013 but with a fraction of the crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Constructed in the 16th century as a defensive structure, the walls surrounding Lucca’s Old Town are one of Italy\u2019s best-preserved examples of fortification. And our favourite way to explore? On two wheels. Circle the ramparts, uncover the history hidden between the walls and enjoy a picnic of local Tuscan produce overlooking the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Take the trail less travelled in Peru<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trip: <\/strong>Inca Trail Express<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we say \u2018Peru<\/a>\u2019, does your mind jump to the Inca Trail? It may be the Pachamama of treks \u2013 and don\u2019t get us wrong, it\u2019s incredible \u2013 but if you\u2019re keen to veer off the well-worn path and do something a little different, the Quarry Trail could be just the ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kicking off in Choquequilla, a small ceremonial site where Incas worshipped the moon, trek to a remote community near Qory Song\u2019o Hill for sweeping valley views and visit sacred tombs seldom seen by travellers. You\u2019ll still get to visit the Lost City of the Incas, AKA Machu Picchu<\/a>, after the trek, but the Quarry Trail helps reduce the impact of overtourism and spread the benefits to more Andes communities. Win-win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Trek to Colombia\u2019s Lost City of Teyuna<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trip: <\/strong>Lost City Trekking in Colombia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ancient city of Teyuna, the (other) Lost City, is one of Colombia<\/a>\u2019s most significant archeological sites. Hidden in the Sierra Nevada mountains among dense jungle, the ruins are a testament to the architectural mastery of the prehispanic Tayrona civilisation, which predated the Incas. The site was off-limits to travellers for many years and remains off the tourist radar… for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only way to get to Teyuna is on a multi-day trek. After diving into Colombia\u2019s culture in the historic cities of Cartagena and Santa Marta, spend four days journeying through the rainforest, meeting the spiritual leaders of local Indigenous communities and unwinding in natural pools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Uncover Navajo history in Bears Ears National Monument<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the thrills of wading through the Virgin River Narrows and exploring Bryce Canyon’s crimson-coloured hoodoos, there are many opportunities to connect with Utah’s landscapes on a deeper level.
