Intrepid\u2019s Expeditions<\/a> are essentially a bottle of the secret sauce that kickstarted the company 35 years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018They\u2019re our most Intrepid trips,\u2019 says Tara Kennaway, Intrepid\u2019s senior product manager responsible for Expeditions. \u2018They\u2019re the trips that really hark back to the origins of our business<\/a> in the late 80s when our founders travelled across Africa, exploring as they went, really engaging with local communities and really getting under the skin of destinations.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Maybe there were a few surprises along the way, but by the end it was like, \u201cWow, that <\/em>was a trip.\u201d\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intrepid’s Expeditions are about doing something you’ve always dreamed of (or something that never even occurred to you). These trips serve up adventures like trekking in Pakistan’s Karakoram Mountains<\/a>, visiting spectacular architecture and desert landscapes in Tunisia<\/a> and travelling to islands off-beaten-track like Timor-Leste<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018They might be the only trip that we run in a destination,\u2019 Tara says. \u2018Even just hearing the destination\u2019s name might conjure thoughts like, \u201cWow I wonder what that\u2019s like\u201d or \u201cI\u2019ve always wanted to travel there.\u201d\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the far-flung nature of Expeditions, they\u2019re tailormade for leader-led, small group travel. There\u2019s a chance you\u2019ll need permits to access certain areas or specialist knowledge about local communities, whether that’s advice on what to wear or social customs. Not to mention the tourism infrastructure itself might be far more limited than what travellers are used to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, exploring these places on your own might not be possible in the first place. But with a passionate leader and eager adventurers alongside, you\u2019re able to leave the admin aside and focus on the moments that matter.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s where the Expedition label comes in handy. Tara acknowledges that Expeditions are \u2018a space for us to try something out, test something new and see if it grows\u2019. They\u2019re not specifically limited edition, but \u2018they might not be something that stays in our range for very long.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for travellers, it sets the tone for the trip to come. It says that while there might not be hot showers, well-paved roads or cell reception,\u00a0other rewards await. Spotting humpback whales in the Comoros Islands<\/a> or taking a moment to yourself in the tranquility of Bhutan\u2019s<\/a> Tang Valley don\u2019t happen every day, after all. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These adventures are more concentrated in one country, region or even just a particular route, so \u2018you might not explore as far, but you can explore a bit deeper,\u2019 says Tara. That might look like spending 16 days exploring northeastern India<\/a>, or spending five days thoroughly immersed in Australia\u2019s Red Centre with the Traditional Owners of the land. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remoteness of some of these destinations, however, comes with a sense of responsibility.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018It\u2019s important to do tourism in our way \u2013 making sure it\u2019s community based, that local people are getting employment [and economic benefits] from our trips,\u201d says Tara.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Pakistan\u2019s a really good example. For both the Expedition<\/a> and the Women’s Expedition<\/a> we met an amazing woman who started her own tourism business<\/a> employing and training women leaders. She\u2019s a real trailblazer. She really got what we were trying to do, which made it easy to work with her and we’re running amazing trips there as a result.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After her own expedition to Vanuatu<\/a>, Tara learned that this style of trip really does give you a different lens into a destination.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I\u2019d thought Vanuatu was so much more touristy than it actually is. I thought people just go to the beach, they go to the resorts, they maybe do some day tours from the resort \u2013 because that\u2019s all I\u2019d seen. In fact, that was just because there wasn\u2019t anybody else doing trips like us outside the popular areas.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018The other travellers were completely blown away too. The feedback was all \u201cit\u2019s just us here, hey!\u201d\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018It\u2019s very personal, in that way. It\u2019s a very personal moment when you\u2019re not experiencing the same thing as thousands of other tourists. It becomes your <\/em>experience. When you return home, people\u2019s reactions aren\u2019t \u201cOh, I did that\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m doing that later this year.\u201d They say, \u201cOh wow, you went there<\/em>?\u201d\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n
