So, you\u2019re ready for your next getaway and you\u2019ve finally settled on the general region (good choice by the way) but what happens now? How can you even begin to decide between the natural wonders and captivating colours of Iceland<\/a> and the untouched wilderness and wintry weather of Greenland<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both countries have fascinating cultures, mouthwatering cuisine, unbelievable landscapes (think glaciers and geysers and geothermal spectacles – oh my!) and plenty of activities on offer, but which one does it best?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018Land of fire and ice\u2019 has a strong culture with roots going back centuries to the days of its healthy Viking population in the 800s. Defined by history and traditional customs, this country\u2019s rich beginning is still celebrated today with lots of rules set in place to protect and preserve its past \u2013 think naming babies in a way that abides by grammatical rules and Icelandic tradition and observing several national holidays and celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iceland also draws its culture from literature with plenty of myths and legends told to young children when they\u2019re growing up, namely folk tales of elves, gnomes, and fairies. With impressive landscapes like the ones in Iceland, it\u2019s easy to imagine where these magical stories came from.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can\u2019t tell the story of Greenland\u2019s culture without also telling the story of its Indigenous people, the Inuit people of Greenland. Reaching Greenland around 1300AD, the Inuit people practiced Thule traditions and were known as \u2018hunters\u2019, using dog sleds and advanced harpoon technology (at the time) to survive in Greenland\u2019s often harsh conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These ancient practices of hunting are still very much alive in Greenland\u2019s culture today with many Greenlanders supplementing their diet and gathering materials from this source. Other traditions that have carried down through the years include telling Inuit legends, throwing money during celebrations such as weddings and baptisms, and giving each other \u2018Inuit kisses\u2019 \u2013 the process of showing love by smelling one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to its unique location in between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, Greenland\u2019s cuisine is made up of a lot of seafood with its national dish being suaasat – a thick, frothy soup traditionally made from a number of things including seal, whale, or seabirds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, Greenland\u2019s cuisine can take a little getting used to but if that soup\u2019s not for your tastebuds, there are plenty of other delicious dishes and accompaniments to try from crowberry marmalade to reindeer mignon. And don\u2019t forget to wash your meal down with a Greenlandic coffee (a tasty concoction of whisky, Kahlua, Grand Marnier, whipped cream, and coffee).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s face it, if you want warm, tropical weather in summer then Iceland\u2019s not the place you\u2019re travelling to but while it might not quite get up to sunbathing temperatures, the seasons of June, July, and August still reach highs of around 13\u00b0C\/55\u00b0F.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, this is practically sweltering for the Nordic country as winter lows can drop the temperature down to a freezing -3\u00b0C\/27\u00b0F (it does have \u2018ice\u2019 in its name after all).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While these temperatures can fluctuate during the year, the one thing that remains consistent in Iceland weather-wise is the rain. Each month experiences around 25mm-50mm which means that each day is likely to bring at least a light smattering of rain. But this also depends on the area of Iceland you\u2019re in with the south coast experiencing windier and wetter conditions than that of other regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s going to come as no surprise to anyone that the best months to visit Greenland are the summer ones of June, July, and August when temperatures can reach as high as 15\u00b0C\/59\u00b0F and the sun stays up all night. While that might not seem very warm, it\u2019s better than the piercing lows of -20\u00b0C\/-4\u00b0F the country experiences in winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But of course, with the plummeting temperatures comes the chance to see the mystical aurora borealis (whose colours dance across the night sky from October until March), so you\u2019ll still see plenty of travellers around during December, January, and February.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, while temperatures can exceed freezing levels, it doesn\u2019t actually feel that cold thanks to the country\u2019s low humidity levels. The air in Greenland is very dry and while that means you can see further than you\u2019re used to (mountain peaks can appear closer than they actually are), it also means you need to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the cold temperatures might have you wanting to curl up in front of your guesthouse\u2019s fireplace with a good book and a cup of kaffi (coffee), there\u2019s plenty of adventure to be had in Iceland with activities that range from relaxing to adventurous at your perfectly gloved fingertips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you want to lace up your boots and hike to Vatnajokull (Europe\u2019s largest glacier), soak in the mineral-rich waters of Grindavik\u2019s famous blue lagoon, enjoy a scenic drive along the rugged coasts of East Fjords, or simply take a walking tour of Reykjavik\u2019s landmark attractions (think the old harbour and Hallgrimskirkja church), you\u2019ll never get bored of exploring this icy isle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That might sound like a cop out but these two Nordic countries both promise an unforgettable adventure you won\u2019t stop telling your friends about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
