When Mark and his 11-year-old daughter Quinn decided to travel together through Cambodia, they expected an adventure. What they didn\u2019t expect was one of the greatest experiences of their lives. Mark shares what made this particular trip so special, and why he recommends every parent travels with their kids.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark Kosiba isn\u2019t your typical travel guy. The 54-year-old father of three is a self-proclaimed \u2018working dude\u2019, who entered the workforce straight out of college and hasn\u2019t really stopped. He\u2019s done a handful of business trips to China, but hasn\u2019t done much travel for fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That all changed a few years ago, when a friend of Mark\u2019s \u2013 who takes a whole month off to travel each year \u2013 suggested they go on an Intrepid trip to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam<\/a>. That was all it took to get Mark hooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family travel is such a great way to learn about the world, and each other.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This year, Mark decided to hit the road with a new travel companion: his 11-year-old daughter Quinn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something unique about having that one-on-one time travelling with a child,\u201d Mark says. \u201cWhen you\u2019re without the sisters and mom, we get to know each other a lot better. It\u2019s incredibly powerful and important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark and Quinn \u2013 along with a father-son pair they\u2019re friends with \u2013 took Intrepid\u2019s 8-day Cambodia Family Holiday with Teenagers<\/a>, and Quinn was pretty nervous about her first trip overseas. \u201cIt\u2019s a whole different part of the world and I was excited to see it, but also nervous about things going wrong, like missing our flight or getting stuck somewhere,\u201d Quinn says. \u201cBut when we finally got there, all that went away and I was so happy to be there with my friends and my dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Travelling with kids, particularly one-on-one away from siblings and another parent, can be a great way to build resilience and cope with whatever challenges life might throw at you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe talked a lot about what might happen if we lost our passports or missed our flight,\u201d Mark says. \u201cUltimately, it\u2019s about not panicking \u2013 whatever happens, we\u2019re going to figure it out together. In fact, Mark believes some of those unexpected things can lead to the best memories. \u201cThere\u2019s magic in things going sideways when you\u2019re travelling, that some people might look at as a negative, but it\u2019s just part of the experience. The ability to face a problem and then solve it with your kid? I can\u2019t express how great it feels to do that,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest things that made Mark and Quinn\u2019s trip so memorable was their Intrepid leader Patsreymom. \u201cWe felt this bubble of safety travelling around Cambodia<\/a> with her,\u201d Mark says. \u201cShe was so intuitive with the kids. I felt safe to take chances I wouldn\u2019t normally take if I was trying to travel with Quinn by myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quinn has since lost her travel jitters and is excited to see more of the world. \u201cThailand sounds really cool, and maybe China <\/a>too,\u201d she says. \u201cBasically, I just want to go out of America and see a lot of other places! If we go on another trip with Intrepid, I think I\u2019m going to feel safer because I\u2019ll be with people who know what to do and what to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

For parents who might feel nervous about travelling one-on-one with their kids, Mark has one piece of advice: do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTravelling with your kids will be one of the greatest things you\u2019ll ever do,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen you completely replant yourself in another part of the world where you\u2019re dealing with things like language, culture, food \u2013 there\u2019s an intensity. You bond, you learn about each other, and it changes the relationship dynamic between you and your kid. It\u2019s the coolest thing ever.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
