To help us all feel a bit closer right now as we adjust to the new normal, we want to celebrate the work of some of the industry\u2019s greatest travel photographers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ones who capture the travel moments that take our breath\u00a0<\/span>away\u00a0 \u2013<\/span>\u00a0 from the sunrise that looks too magical to be real, to the shared moment of spontaneous laughter with a stranger.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We were thrilled to chat to Ryan Bolton<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>@ryanbolton<\/span><\/a> is where you\u2019ll find him on the \u2018gram), one of\u00a0Intrepid\u2019s\u00a0favourite\u00a0travel photographers. In fact, if you\u2019re familiar with our website and social channels, you\u2019ll probably\u00a0recognise\u00a0a bunch of his work that we\u2019ve featured!\u00a0He let us in on his most memorable experiences capturing moments on the road, and which cuisine he would happily eat every day for the rest of his life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: When did you first pick up a camera and discover your love of travel photography?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:<\/strong> I was\u00a0<\/span>21-years-old<\/span>\u00a0and had just finished my undergrad degree. I travelled to Ghana<\/a> to work as a journalist trainer in a Liberian refugee camp called\u00a0<\/span>Buduburam<\/span>. I was there with\u00a0<\/span>J<\/span>ournalists for Human Rights to help local journalists tell the stories of what was happening in the refugee settlement. I\u00a0<\/span>was\u00a0helping them<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>publish a newspaper and I started taking photos using a basic Olympus point-and-shoot camera<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 and\u00a0<\/span>I couldn\u2019t stop. It changed how I saw the world, how I connect with the world<\/span>\u00a0and m<\/span>y photography started to get noticed after that trip.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Where is your\u00a0<\/span>favourite<\/span>\u00a0shoot destination and why?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:<\/strong> That would have to be Morocco<\/a>. As soon as you step into Marrakesh\u2019s old city market,\u00a0<\/span>Jemaa<\/span>\u00a0el-<\/span>Fnaa<\/span>, you\u2019re instantly transported into a new world. More than this, it was on an Intrepid expedition into the Atlas Mountains with a nomadic Berber family that changed me. For nearly a week, we hiked with the family through ancient migration paths, walked with their herd of sheep, goats, and four camels, slept in ancient caves and didn\u2019t see any other souls for that week-long trip. Life-changing is a good word\u00a0<\/span>to use\u00a0<\/span>here.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: How did you turn your passion into your career? What advice would you have for budding photographers?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:<\/strong> By doing. And maybe a little bit of obsession, truth be told. You need to want it more than anything else, and to put in the work. Resilience needs to go\u00a0<\/span>hand-in-hand<\/span>\u00a0with your passion, to see it through the constant ups and downs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: What are your top tips for amateur photographers?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The magic of South-East Asia.<\/p><\/div>\n

A:<\/strong> Just shoot, non-stop. And experiment with your shots, take the time to explore how manual mode<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0on your camera work. The best way to learn, especially with photography, is to do.\u00a0<\/span>Over and over again<\/span>\u00a0and y<\/span>our style will naturally emerge.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Which photo or series that you\u2019ve produced are you most proud of and why?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:<\/strong> That\u2019s a tough one. Ultimately, probably some of my photography throughout Africa<\/a>. It\u2019s my\u00a0<\/span>favourite<\/span>\u00a0continent to shoot in and I\u2019ve been 10 times now<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0from Egypt<\/a> to Kenya<\/a> to Ghana<\/a> to Morocco to South Africa<\/a>. The people always warm my heart, there\u2019s something new to explore, and Africa fills the soul.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: What\u2019s the most memorable interaction you\u2019ve had with a local on the road and why?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:\u00a0<\/strong>It would<\/span>\u00a0probably be the amazing Berber family we stayed with in tents and caves in the mountains of Morocco. There\u2019s a bond that\u2019s formed when traversing harsh land in harsh temperatures and daily pushing yourselves for over a week, together. It was full of connection. That family and their bond (the mother is a widow with two daughters) will stay with me forever.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To be sure, this connection happens on every adventure<\/span>\u00a0of this nature<\/span>. When I did<\/span>\u00a0the Inca Trail<\/a> in\u00a0<\/span>Peru<\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0we spent<\/span>\u00a0four-day<\/span>s and<\/span>\u00a0four nights in the clouds\u2026 It’s equal parts\u00a0<\/span>gruelling<\/span>\u00a0and beautiful<\/span>\u00a0and t<\/span>hat will bond any group together. We still have a\u00a0<\/span>WhatsApp<\/span>\u00a0group chat going with that group. Hola!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another moment was along the Wild Coast of South Africa, when a group of us took an afternoon to volunteer with the local soup kitchen for a day. The kids were hilarious, we played soccer, were part of a music video and helped make lunch for the local kids.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: What\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0your dream shoot destination that you\u2019re yet to visit and why?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:<\/strong> That\u2019s a toss-up between Japan<\/a> and Antarctica<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>t<\/span>otally different adventures to be sure). I was\u00a0<\/span>actually supposed<\/span>\u00a0to travel to Japan last May with Intrepid for a food tour<\/a> ahead of the Olympics in 2020. It was a blow when it was cancelled for obvious reasons related to COVID-19, but I will make that trip eventually with Intrepid. Positive vibes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From a young age, I\u2019ve always wanted to get to Antarctica to\u00a0<\/span>take\u00a0<\/span>phot<\/span>os<\/span>. There\u2019s nothing like it, it\u2019s far from easy; the challenge and adventure draws me in. I had a taste of it while in Iceland<\/a> with Intrepid at\u00a0<\/span>J\u00f6kuls\u00e1rl\u00f3n<\/span>\u00a0this unreal Iceberg Glacial Lake.\u00a0<\/span>It looks like a t<\/span>otally different world, it\u2019s intoxicating.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:<\/strong> Pad Thai. Hands down. Every meal. Let\u2019s go!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: What is the biggest lesson you\u2019ve learned from travelling?<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:<\/strong> That, ultimately, we\u2019re all the same. Humans are naturally community-based, and at our core, we all yearn for the same things: love, family, experiences, respect. The more you travel, the more you see this. In a world that at times seems\u00a0<\/span>polari<\/span>s<\/span>ed<\/span>, travel<\/span>l<\/span>ing helps make the world feel smaller, more connected.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Q: Any final words of wisdom?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A:<\/strong> More than anything, I\u2019m grateful. It\u2019s not lost on me the opportunity to share the beauty of the world in photos.
